It isn't terrible but it's no water/dragon. That typing only has one weakness and a lot of resists. Plus it's a good stab combo. I think the only reason people don't think about it often is we've only had two Pokémon with the typing: a box legendary and kingdra. If we got a pseudo legendary or even a starter with that typing, it would be really damn popular. I think rape ape is also proving ghost/fighting to be a good combo too

This is a meme. Normal and Electric are even harder to force out, but that doesn't make them able to switch onto anything like a Steel type can.
Perhaps the right balance is something like Bug/Steel.

It's all meta dependent.
If you just measure it mathematically based on how well your STAB hits and how many weaknesses and resistances you have, then yes, Fairy/Steel is objectively the best.
But that doesn't account for the fact that its weaknesses are the extremely common Fire and Ground. And the 2 types it can't hit neutrally are the extremely common Fire and Steel.

Not even accounting for stats, movepool, and ability. Mawile is Fairy/Steel, but it's also a sub-400 BST shitmon.

If a Pokemon can't possibly be rendered unusable by its type, then typing literally does not matter at all.
Think about it. If there was a Pokemon with a "bad type" who was just barely on the edge of being good, and it would be usable if it had a "good type", then that would mean that the type was a contributing factor, even if it was a small one.
But you just conceded that that could literally never happen and therefore type has absolutely zero impact on viability whatsoever.

We always knew ghost/fighting was amazing, it's just that it was only on a fucking Mythical so it was basically unused. It hits literally every pokemon for neutral STAB except for Hisuian Zoroark.

Whenever someone talks about a type being strong, they're only talking about the Legendaries/Mythical with those types, not the regular mons, just look at the difference between Tinkaton/Mawile/Klefki compared to Zacian-C/Magearna, the Regular Fairy/Steels has averaging stats at best while the Legendaries/Mythicals are broken.

There is a reason why he used Zacian as the example mon cause he's only taking about the mons like Zacian and Magearna while trying to blanket the other mons with the same type to be just as good as those two causes of association.

by the numbers, it's the best defensive typing in the game, unless you count the Ground immunity of Steel/Flying as being worth more defensively. the best offensive typings by the numbers are Ice/Ground and Ice/Fighting, sadly the only Ice/Fighting type is a shitmon.

Look, I tend to forget that fairy is strong against dragon for some stupid reason I don't know why. Maybe because I think it's retarded. And yes I did forget that dracovish exists. Pardon me for skipping generation 8. I still think that even with the low amount of resistances which somebody felt the justification to correct me on, which is totally legit, it is still a pretty solid type combination. I stand by my point that if we had it on a pseudo legendary everybody would talk about how amazing it is. Kingdra is a real threat once it gets going and Dracovish I think would have done well even without its broken move.

He's not really an oldfag with well-informed historical opinions based on experience, he's just a guy who got into competitive like 10 years ago and to my knowledge has only really played the older generations for fan service crap like nuzlocke. So I don't know if his opinion really holds water when you look at the greater scope of this competitive scene across several generations. Certain type combinations fare far better depending on the current meta. Fairy/Steel was considered pretty good even in Generation 6 when it debuted, but even back then it wasn't considered the best typing. Generation 8 is probably the only generation where it dominated and that was solely because of one Pokémon with extremely OP everything. We have Pokémon with the same typing that are considered garbage, like non-Mega Mawile, and others that only work due to gimmicks, like Klefki. Right now what is the best typing in this current generation prior to home or DLC? I would say either Ghost/Fighting or Ghost/Fairy. Ghosts in general are really good this generation but that type also has a lot of really strong Pokémon with good stat spreads and moves this gen. Fairy feels a bit more flat as a lot of the currently available Pokémon with that type don't really stand out on the top of the heap unless they're a Paradox mon.

If somebody had never known much about ice/dragon type they would think that it's pretty good right now because Baxcalibur has an amazing combination of stats, move pool and ability. But on paper that typing looks like garbage. I think another great example is Ttar, who is amazing despite its typing suggesting otherwise. An inverse would be something like Mawile, which has a pretty solid typing on paper but ends up being kind of a garbage Pokémon without its mega

This is what it comes down to. Steel is fucking insane defensively, so add any secondary type that complements that and you have a reasonable answer. Steel/Fairy, Steel/Flying, Steel/Ghost all stand out.

Based on being on anything, Definitely top 5, but not as good as steel flying or poison dark. Being weak to EQ and fire is not very good. Offensively, steel and fairy aren’t that good stab types, but much better as coverage moves.
