It feels like this era of anime had less of a filter to kids about this sort of thing. Plenty of episodic kodomo anime from then had an episode about the pretty girl who's actually awful. It's all cloaked in a humorous situation so you can dismiss it as just a joke, but it's pretty true-to-life. I don't think I'd see anything similar if I watched a modern episode of Detective Conan or Pretty Cure or something.
