I was thinking of bw2 when writing this but they are not that structurally good since or’s a slog in the beginning

are you referring to the any-order gyms and whatnot? because I’m finding that to be more annoying than anything
there’s no real way to know the strength of any particular gym leader/titan/star base until you start it, so it’s incredibly easy to overlevel
I didn’t realize the dark base was the weakest, so I did the fire one first then looped around and just mopped the floor with it because I was so much stronger
not saying the game needs to be linear, but there should be more of an indication of what the “intended route” is so you don’t make it even easier than it already is by overleveling
