As for advice?
Read a good deal.
Thats probably my no. 1 tip. Lets you expand your vocabulary, study how stories are written, etc.
Can be fantasy, crime, romance, whatever you'd like to read, though a bit of literature never goes amiss, even if you aren't planning to use symbolism and themes or whathaveyou. Personal faves are Blood Meridian, Catch 22, Heart of Darkness and Moby Dick. Worth a read if you have the time.
Also, plan the story out beforehand. Not so regimented that you know the entire story, and are just recounting it to the page, thats boring as batshit to do, and the whole point of writing is to have fun, no?
But a vague outline of how the story supposed to go can be mighty helpful. Gives you something to work off of and refer to. I used to just write from my mind, but that often resulted in a disconnected and uneven final product, I felt.
A chap in the mienshao thread had some nice tips to offer, as well.
