we already have this thread up. I won't deny that overall they're some of the strongest games in the series but they still carry a lot of flaws from the originals. The game is too linear for the first 5 gyms with not much going on, the Pokemon for these gyms are also terrible with hardly any Gen 2 mons

Their time was when the Gameboy and Gameboy Color were the most popular handhelds in the world.
That was their platform and what they were competing against. And for the handheld market, Pokemon RGBY and Pokemon GSC are far above par and could probably be called the best games made for either system.

Chrono Trigger and shit existing at the same time for home consoles doesn't mean that Pokemon wasn't very impressive and boundary pushing within its market.

There's a reason they could rerelease effectively just a graphically updated Pokemon Yellow and sell >14 million copies.
Because the core loop of the gameplay is extremely attractive and people love it.

Otherwise RGBY had better artwork than most Gameboy games. And was more feature rich and had more to explore and experience than most any others.
