He's the most similar to Ash, the anime even goes out of its way to show and point that out. That plus the way he was written in the games (just changed Galar to world) made him the most suitable for the final boss in the anime.

He did beat Eternatus first form, he couldn't beat the 2nd form. And the games imply he is the best as well with the whole Raihan card schict, it requires a lot of mental gymnastics and active denial to think he is not the strongest.

There is more evidence that he is champion-level than otherwise, specially since in other games Wallace of all people was a champion.

Thats just a fact. Cynthia couldn't beat Mega Lucario with Dynamax Togekiss + her ace. Leon easily took it down with just 2 base mons.
