In a lot of ways, fanon Aura is a conflation with Infinity Energy, caused by the lack of any better canonical underpinning for what Pokemon do. It's like if the fan magazine scene insisted on the Death Star being a lightsaber-related Dark Side artifact over the superficial functional similarities just because the EU didn't explain power generation yet, and sticking by it long after the introduction of Hypermatter Reactors.
