i struggled to think of a defining “good” for gen 1 and 7-9 because it’s mostly a lot of smaller “good”s with the latter three and gen 1 was hard-carried by pokemania hype imo
RBY are a bit outdated but Puzzle League and Snap are still fun. Nothing will ever be as fun as playing that shit with your friends while obsessing over the franchise though.

Gen 1 - Laid the groundwork of a fun monster collecting adventure rpg
Gen 2 - Built upon the groundwork, adding more, while leaning on the previous game as post game content.
Gen 3 - Cemented a high stakes story could occur
Gen4 - Physical/Special split, and tied higher powers to the world
Gen 5 - Took the best the series had to offer, decent story, decent content, decent characters end game content that was more than a few buildings, and pushed it to the limits of the time.
