He threatens to make you immortal at the climax of X. At no other point in the game (or anywhere at all in Y) does his plan ever involve attempting to attain eternal youth for himself or his underlings. His stated and attempted goal is to kill everyone because they're bad. Team Flare themselves follow him out of the belief that they'll survive his apocalypse and become the rulers of a new age, seemingly unaware that they're going to die too.

This is why people don't understand his plan. The immortality angle is only there because GF wanted a "life vs death" theme to the plot and half-assed it when they couldn't figure out a good way to implement Lysandre without him trying to burn the planet.

Two problems with that
The machine doesn't grant eternal youth, AZ is immortal but freakishly aged. And even if it did, Lysandre never at all states that's his goal. He was very clear about wanting to kill everyone outside of Team Flare, plain and simple.

Eternal youth is part of his motivation. Diantha tells him she isn't afraid of aging because "nothing lasts forever", and he responds with this twisted ideal about making world forever beautiful. Y emphasizes more the wiping out the "filth" part, but its related.

Ghetsis literally got a whole life planned from scratch, but he failed and didn’t manage to make a comeback once the slippery slope started.

Giovanni should be higher, but I mostly feel he has plot armor out of bias.

Eternal youth is metaphorical.
His goal is to create a sustainable society, which in his twisted mind meant culling humans and wiping out Pokemon (yes, he wanted to kill all Pokemon, even his own, people forget that detail). He believed that unchecked population growth would inevitably lead to war and over-consumption of the world's finite resources.
Team Flare's obsession with beauty was mostly them misinterpreting Lysandre's words, believing that they were chosen by him for being beautiful people, when in reality they're just some spoiled rich fucks and Lysandre was an unironic "just stop being poor" elite who blamed the have nots for being lazy.

Half the team still genuinely believes in N and became the loyalist faction, of course I played the game. I also think the "oh, Ghetsis was evil all along and they enslaved them" was a pretty stupid cop-out on what could've been a genuinely interesting concept of a team, but yeah. They really are possibly the one team in Pokemon whose motives might make genuine sense and could be empathized with, because Pokemon abuse and slavery clearly does happen within the games (like Team Rocket selling Pokemon for profit)
