Yes, if a move is Dark type it's not just like a literal bite, it's a malicious bite done with ill intent. Unless you think all jaw based moves like Fire Fang, or Poison Fang are normal bites. They are different due to the type. If they are not imbued by anything from the type they would stay normal type like bite used to be.

Yeah, Earth being one of the four primary elements in alchemty, alongside Air, Water, and Fire. That's why Water, Flying, Fire, and Ground are all special types, because they're all in the domain of magic.

Grass is obvious because it's just attacks based on foliage. Ghost licks, Grass whacks with vines. Ghost shoots a lump of shadow, Grass uses a beam of light. All things that affect the physical world.

There are honestly good things about both systems however many Pokemon clearly suffered immensely with the fixed damage types as if GF just didn't really put enough thought into it
With the physical/special split it seemed like GF was designing things a lot more intentionally
I think a lot of the problems with the old system could be fixed simply by removing STAB

It was inevitable for the split to happen. If they kept adding more moves they would have ended up like yugioh to keep to make them different. A lot of the problems stem from gamefreak just slapping the mechanic in and not fixing any of the move pools to match the new mechanic

This is entirely due to limiting EVs to 508. If EVs were allowed back to 252 in every stat, bulky mixed attackers would have been vible even into Gen 9.

Basically, the EV limit was more impactful than the Physical/Special split. Even with the P/S if EVs were maxed out you always run the move that does the most raw damage.

for the record, ghost stayed physical in gen 2 because that's how it was in gen 1 (the only ghost move there is lick), and gen 2 was designed to be compatible with gen 1. Otherwise, they would have made dark physical and ghost special.

It's best moveset was sunny day + flamethrower + solar beam, making dark physical would nerf it's pursuit and it's crunch but it would hardly make it weak considering the ghost and psychic types in the game aren't that bulky physically. Even slowking isn't better off because it can also be hit by solar beam.

The problem of mixed attackers isn't the phys/special split, it's the 4 move limitation. The fact that they are mixed means that ideally they would want two attacks of every type they need to cover to exploit any weakness, but that means they can't do anything other than attack.

Prior to the split they couldn't exploit weaknesses anyway, which favoured mons with the appropriate defense or special defence allocation that favours their typing instead.

If pokemon could use 6 or 8 moves even slow frail mixed attackers could be viable (trick room, agility...)

Houndoom was the ONLY special dark type and it literally had solid attack and secondary fire stab. Dark should have been physical.

But I think a bigger issue (aside from the split) Is EV’s/natures. You can’t max out both at attacking stats at the same time (well you could if you want to lose), meaning base stats on the lower attacking stats are a “waste”

This. Effort levels in Legends Arceus should have been the way to move forward because it fixes more than EVs and IVs did

I think Legends also did a good job with the how they handled set up moves (both physical/special stats boosted, as well as having them wear off over time (I think the cap of how high stats could be boosted was also lowered but I'm not sure).

People bitch about P/S split because certain bromons lost STAB moves without getting new moves to replace them, becuse GF was trying to nerf them
Gen 1 Gyrados hits harder with Hydro Pump than Gen 4 Gyarados does with Waterfall.
Gengar meanwhile got better every gen, even with Pursuit existing to mog it.
