Yes, you can only switch the battery and keep the save if you have the cart in a powered on console while swapping.

If I remember correctly, the only Johto pokemon that require the gamecube games to get are Ho-oh, Lugia, Celebi and Jirachi (just because you can't get them from events anymore). Deoxys and Mew are impossible to get in Gen 3 legitimately without events.

All the other pokemon are available in either the Sevii Islands in FRLG, or in post-game Emerald. Professor Birch even gives you the choice of one Johto starter in Emerald after you finish the Hoenn pokedex, so if you're really dedicated you can get all three without needing the gamecube games.

Just to add to the whole dexcut shenanigans, I really think shekelfreak should've allowed pokemon in HOME to be usable specifically for HOME in the cases that they cant go to another game. Just add Pokemon Amie and Online Battling or some sort of battle simulator type of shit like showdown and it'd be golden with no issues whatsoever. My biggest misgiving with dexcut is that the pokemon without a passport are stuck as trophy data unless you cough up 60--sorry I mean 70 dollars for the newest game, and an extra 30 plus tax if the mon is only in the other half of the new game.

I mean yeah you can do that FOR NOW, but it's infinitely annoying about how many hoops you have to jump through to """illegally""" use your favorite instance of pixels in the new game.

anything you transfer from 3ds to switch with pkhex or PKSM will be detected as a hack. every pokemon that touches home is given an ID code, if an oldgen pokemon doesn't have that code they know it was moved illegitimately

They keep them in S/S but you can't do online tourneyments without cleaning their moveset and some moves will be unusable but still present.
I transferred my Reshiram then learned I could have given it roost to use in the battle tower agaist leon not that I needed it but would have made it easier to carry the team.

Acktually, a cloud based service is safer that having them on a single catridge data redundancy protects them. It is the best option other than backing them up yourself with PKSM and saving several copies in different places

Cloud storage has more variables and more chances to lose your data. The company can go under, there could be an outage, you might not have internet access, your payment could be interrupted, you could forget your password or be unable to log-in. All that pales in comparison to your pokemon being stuck in home. I have 7 generations with multiple games that I can trade and play at will with no additional cost. The only risk variable is physical damage to the cartridge.

You do realise you can take the majority of them out of home? It's an intermediary between games.
There's a good chance going forward we might get half assed remakes but they'll include all pokemon previously available.
