Remember, everyone!

A good puzzle can be solved as quickly as the player can figure it out.

If having perfect EVs/IVs doesn't matter, that's alright.

If my foes use perfect EV/IV mons, make it quick to get perfect EVs/IVs.

Generate Pokemon with perfect IVs by default, add a NPC who can set my speed or attack or both to 1 if desired for hyper autistic min-maxing (trick room etc)

And let me buy cheap Vitamins that boost my EVs by 1 at a time without any cap other than the 252 cap, and ensure multiples of these vitamins can be used at once. Finally add a move tutor who can teach your pokemon anything it can learn via level up, tutor, or egg move. Or at the very least improve what TMs can teach and add cheaper TM stores earlier on in game.

If you want to go all the way, replace a Pokemon's level in stat calculation with 50. Perfect. A pokemon ready for the real fights. How fast was that?

It was faster than giving your Starter Pokemon's recently hatched child from a 1% route encounter in the last 90% of the game with the desired Egg Move and a macho brace, EV grinding while counting the kills on wild encounters or against a harmless EV grinding trainer, and giving your Pokemon EXP candies or lv100 Memento Blissey grinding...

Come on. We're not all kids with infinite free time. Don't artificially keep my levels below my foes or use level as a substitute for a difficulty curve. Don't take baby steps towards speed. Embrace speed like my next Pokemon game does.

Is crit chance super fucked in Renegade platinum? I'm noticing crits damn near all the time, compared to other romhacks where there aren't nearly as many. I've also seen many nuzlockes ended in this romhack in particular due to crits.

What's a core gameplay mechanic you'd personally like to see overhauled? Abilities, berries, EVs, etc.
I'd personally love berries and healing items being combined somehow, I find that berries fall off hard for me almost immediately in most mainline games, only returning to relevancy for things like Lum Berries/Herbs in online play. Even as early as gen 3 they developed a whole extra system to justify berries (Pokeblocks, then Poffins).

BDSP are getting a lot of love from oldfags with things like Luminescent Platinum, but Sword/Shield mostly appears to have underdeveloped tools. Just not enough people that liked the games, I suppose. And by my understanding, there are numerous differences in hacking BDSP from the mainline games, so that research isn't fully useful. Ironically, if ILCA keeps the same engine for the Gen 5 remakes, we will officially have the most developed communities in:

Laughably, the greatest advancement in Gen 4 (and soon gen 5) hacking has just been GF outsourcing a remake so we're no longer required to deal with developing decompilations of those games. Very amusing when you think about it.

I also wouldn't really expect gen 8 to get much love from hackers in the long run. Like gen 6, it was a transitional step. Already hacking S/V is more popular. I am not certain if specific reasons why other than it being the most recent game, but I'm sure the engine is just a little better than gen 8 (but that may just be wishful thinking).

Instead of ev's as they are now, make it so every pokemon has an "ev pool" that they fill by defeating mons/taking vitamins, then you can put those ev's into whatever stat you'd like and adjust as needed.

This way ev training doesn't have to be a chore, and you can make fights harder without alienating the player.

Fairy/Fighting/Steel is pretty unique.
Ice/Ground/Steel lends good type variety to potentially check your rival's counter pick.
Dark/Psychic/Fighting is an elder classic
Fighting/Rock/Flying
Ground/Fairy/ice if you want to try sending rarer types in the early game.

I've just given each Pokemon a separate system that gets points each time they level up or every so many steps. Points can be spent on specific stats a set number of times. I think the final piece is I allow all stats to be boosted to the max, and I've just made Natures into "some stats start boosted, others start behind". This way you get the strength/weakness aspect nature for story playthroughs, and you get to "overcome" natures late game. Makes you feel like a master trainer rather than an RNG goon when making competitive-ready Pokemon. I also removed IVs, I don't need a Pokemon that's DOA because its seed said so

stop shoving gen 3-on stuff into gen 2 romhacks. abilities are annoying, natures are shitty rng, and EVs are an inferior system to STAT EXP ...most of the additions i've just listed off are only preferable to the original in terms of benefiting competitive gameplay by adding some level of complexity.. but do you really expect anyone to ever play your romhack against another person? never mind develop an entire comp meta around it? at bare minimum take a look at what PLA did – a game that is very decidedly focused only around the single player experience, and so tailors the game engine and features around benefiting that campaign, and not retaining things which only help comp

I actually think a system like this could be fairly interesting - maybe changing natures into something like an increase/decrease to the point cost required to boost certain stats, making natures still feel like a relevant thing for main story progression but it's something that can be overcome with enough effort if you're willing to do it. Something in line with (for a VERY non-Pokemon example) Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup's skill aptitude system where certain character species level up some skills faster than others. No idea how you'd make IVs more interesting though lol

You make IVs interesting by deleting them. The first QoL update for the mechanic is to allow you to directly change them, usually to their max. What is the point of a mechanic you ALWAYS max out if you can? Trick Room / Swagger niche uses need not apply. IVs could be deleted entirely, and you wouldn't notice if you weren't looking for them.

Bad IVs aren't nearly as bad as people make them out to be, for a single player adventure they really don't matter because you have items available to you. The purpose of any RNG-driven aspect of a Pokemon was to make each one feel "unique" to you. There's a reason they are only responsible for a 10% swing in stats, as opposed to the 63 points you can manually swing with effort. Sure, it can present a unique challenge by having an under-performing member of a species, but making that a permanent feature that can't be overcome by "expertise" of the trainer is not that fun. Breeding on it's face seems like a neat idea, committing genetic manipulation. But adding variability means you are now just fishing for perfect natures + IVs, which is not a very engaging mechanic unless you want to grind forever. Unless your romhack is built to encompass these mechanics, it is my opinion that it's a more enjoyable game if natures represent challenges in the form of delayed development, not denied development.

By similar argumentation, good IVs don't matter either, and therefore the mechanic is useless. The notion of no impact implies the mechanic does nothing, and therefore serves no purpose.
With point investment, the player can just choose not to invest in a stat and the same outcome is achieved of driving the stat down to a minimum.
I don't know, my core design philosophy is that RNG impacts gameplay barriers to overcome, not barriers that lock the player out. There should be reasons to catch multiple pokemon of a species outside of RNG manipulation.

Natures should all have different multipliers so there are fewer useless ones. +speed natures should give the other stats harsher drops, neutral natures should give a small omni-boost, natures that boost one defense stat and lower the other should have a much smaller downside and higher benefit. Just stuff like that.
In the real game, 90% of Pokemon just want +speed/-the lowest attack stat.

I don't know if you've played Colosseum or Stadium but those games don't give you battle simulator-level control over your Pokemon and sequences of powerful trainers to fight and a new story and region to tie it all together.

I understand that I AM asking for the moon when I ask for a new Pokemon game better than anything Nintendo can make. But good Pokemon fangames and romhacks exist anyway. And they only get better when Minimal/No Grinding modes/options are added along with other QOL features that respect the player's time.

These games as they were originally made do not give you those options. But you could make them easily in the decomps and you could have exactly what you want. Why they don't make something like this for the Switch is beyond me, as it would sell well and give them a chance to focus on assets they proclaim they don't have time to develop (models and animations, mostly) in a game specifically dedicated to them and light, light, light on story / character design.

Brother you have been mindrotted by the speedup generation who need to finish a game in a single twitch stream. I recognize you ascribe to a mindset that is ideal to CONSOOOM as much content as possible in an age flooding with it, but demanding a game be OPTIMAL with YOUR time when you choose to play it is foolish. If you do not have enough time to play a game, you should be improving your life so you DO have that time. And if you do have the time, why are you so concerned with optimizing?
I agree with you on EV and XP grinding being fucking cringe. But these are symptoms of poor design, NOT of the game "wasting your time". If you need a new team of six every gym, that's the dev's fault for deciding their game is a puzzle sim instead of an RPG, and you need to just skip them. Cutting out leveling and growth through exploration is like removing catching Pokemon. And if you're at that level, you want a Stadium remake, not a hack.

So PokeCommunity added a rule that prevents you from paywalling your game in any way (even leaving a simple paypal link). How do /we/ feel about this? Personally not a huge fan. Blah blah it's a hobby yes but people pour 1000 of hours of their precious time and provide amazing experiences to people, least they can do is give an option for players to give back to them.

I like the way I've seen some devs do it - they put their patch behind a Kofi link, so you can tip some cash before downloading, but they set the minimum to $0 so you don't HAVE to pay.
As for the Pokecommunity issue - I think it's because these links technically constitute the user SELLING their hack, which could be a problem if Nintendo ever flew into another of their rages regarding randoms profiting off their IP. At least, that's how I read the change; stop trying to (blatantly) profit so the site isn't C&D'd

But yeah, I think the meta is

Pokecommunity is dying anyways. There are multiple suitable alternatives. They need to separate and create a decomp and hacking forum specifically so they can become a stronghold of the modern hacking community. Otherwise everything is consigned to a discord that could be wiped out any moment - convenient for in-line chatting, but potentially only temporary in the long run.

Pokecommunity averages 2m visits a month, but the average visit is TWO MINUTES. Know what that traffic is? People forced to route through pokecommunity because that just happens to be a multi-decade home base for ROM hacking of Pokemon games. It's to the point where almost ALL active users per pokecommunities own metrics on their home page show they are present in threads in the romhack-related sections.
I would cheer pokecommunity on if they just shed the old structure and went whole hog into hacking as the site's backbone. They have coasted on being the central hub for so long, and they could implement a lot of modern web features (not social media integration or any cancer like that) to make the site better for hack creators and protect and promote them. Just old. I'm pretty sure it's the same backbone from it's launch in 2002 (?), carried forward by occasional theme updates to pretty the site up but not fix functionality. As I said, they've rested on their laurels, and it makes sense why. Nobody has challenged them, as they had enough momentum and (in those early days) such sufficient architecture and account social features like friends, a personal account messageboard, and PMs to boot, that the site was actually pretty rich in content. It also was the proving grounds for building, exploring, and recruiting for hacks as a side-measure to all the other aspects of the community. I still think Decomps are too alien to your average user. Even just setting it up (especially for GBA games which seems harder) is a pain in the ass. And don't Decomps require you to write C+ code if you wanna get shit done? I know this could lead to broken shit the exact same as Smeargle, but I definitely like the idea of a Pokemon in your Party that can serve as a "flex" spot for coverage or utility, without needing to invest the time into raising another pokemon in the given species any time you want to use it. And since it's single player anyways I'm not too concerned with this one particular Pokemon being busted or anything really. Let the cheeses have cheese.

I know not to expect a masterpiece when I download Pokemon games, so I'm blown away when I see a masterpiece.

+1 IV to every stat per KO means 31 KOs to reach perfected IVs, or generate all Pokemon with perfect IVs because that's what you want unless you're running Trick Room and nobody runs Trick Room in a fucking single-player environment.
+1 EV to the stat boosted by your Nature per KO to reach 252 EVs.
That way people who don't give a shit eventually get perfect EVs/IVs.
Or +252 Attack EVs after purchasing 252 cheap Proteins from the store near the start.
The grind is still there, just optional and significantly reduced in obnoxiousness.

I still play Pokemon as a hobby, but a good RPG battle is a puzzle. An accessible game gives you the tools to solve the puzzle quickly once you figure out how. It asks you to think, not grind.
A bad RPG battle is part of a grindy game where your understanding of the core mechanics are never tested.

Pokemon is not inherently tied to time-hostile player-hostile filler-filled disrespectful game design, and nobody is "hurting your exploration" by fixing a few blatantly retarded mechanics nobody interacts with meaningfully when they have a choice.

Have you ever seen Josh Strife Hayes? Seen the grind in the MMOs he reviews?
If you told him about what EVs and IVs did to competitive Pokemon in Generation 3 I think he'd laugh and say "You're joking".

I wish he'd do a reaction video to imablisy who used Speed Up and RNG manipulation to speed up grinding legitimately for a Pokemon tourney winner's team and it still took forever.

Very true. There are pros and cons no matter what tools you're working with. My old hack I made doesn't get much attention any more. I sometimes look it up on Youtube and occasionally there's some random indian guy playing it on his phone. I realize I'll miss out on a certain demographic due to the nature of Essentials not being as mobile-friendly as a hack would be. But that's OK. I'm thinking the positives outweighs the negatives for me. At the end of the day I just wanna make a game. So far it seems like Essentials makes that real easy for me.

Dissassemblies have been easier to put back together compared to decomps. If you compare the Sonic ones, you just download one from the GitHub, then double click the batch file. Done. It took 3+ failed attempts at installing devkitPro and Cygwin to set up any of the GBA decomps over a year ago, and I'm still reluctant to bother with the WSL way.
It's somewhat recommended to get a feel for a beginner's language like Python before stepping it up to C and then some system's Assembly language. If anyone really wants to get that intricate, go to that LibGen book/pdf piracy site and grab a Python book and a C book and have fun.

I thought over your "as if Level 50" stat system in the night, and while I think that in theory that actually isn't terrible (allowing stat boosts to be present at all times and not negligible until lvls 40-50), when paired with your EV/IV system most Pokemon peak immediately and the level system is now only used to evolve Pokemon and limit movepools.
I think you could have pitched this better. You have the bones of a good sytem here, but couching it in "le quick rewards!" is not the way to go when you're still requiring leveling Pokemon as a core mechanic. You've passed the stat issue down the line, but now you can stop leveling a Pokemon EXACTLY at whatever level it learns a move / evolves, and now leveling that Pokemon up achieves nothing ever again. A Level 50 and Level 30 Pokemon have the potential to be at the same strength.
This is my issue - how do you reconcile stripping out leveling as part of the core mechanics of the games for scaling power, yet stating that others NOT doing that for you is ruining your enjoyment of the product?

It's not about quick rewards because owning big numbers in a RPG isn't the reward to me.

The reward is knowing you've overcome challenges designed to make you think and challenge your game knowledge.

If the game is balanced so that it doesn't matter whether your team of a few Pokemon and some HM Slaves have perfect EVs and IVs and a level near but not over the Gym Leader's strongest Pokemon, that's too easy.

If the game wants me to optimize by making EV/IV optimization necessary, or even forcing me to train up a new Pokemon team for each Gym Leader, the least it can do is make optimization quick and efficient.

When you break these systems down, players only engage with them to reduce their impact on the battle. Either you and your foe have perfect IVs, or somebody's unjustly disadvantaged. Either your team is at the level cap (the next Gym Leader's strongest Pokemon) whether your level cap is self-imposed or not or somebody's at an unfair disadvantage. There is choice in how you spend your EVs, but should grinding a team for them really take hours?

I plan on using this system in my upcoming game.

You don't particularly need good EVs/IVs in these games to go far. I've done quite a few of the 'insane' modes without caring much for EVs/IVs (the only thing I've soft reset for are abilities if ability capsules aren't available yet).
Regarding unfair advantage, isn't that the point of PvE? If you and the AI were on an equal setting in Pokemon, it would be embarrassing if you didn't smash the AI everytime.

Your approach has kernels of useful implementations, but as-is you're looking at basically reinventing every wheel on this thing just to change how EVs are handed out.
My proposal, for your consideration, adopting some of your ideas:

All you really have to do is find where the game calculates stats, and replace "Pokemon Level divided by 100" with "0.5".
Or "50 + (Pokemon Level/100)" to give lv1s the stats of lv51s and lv100s the stats of lv100s, reducing the impact of Level without removing it.
Then you do the same for damage calculation.

Free games still cost time to play, and when you run your own business, time is money.

Nothing's really set in stone just yet, but I like the good ol' Professor introduces you to the world of Pokemon and gives you your first Pokemon and then you take off to explore angle. Like you can always get fancier than that but how many times do you wanna start on a sinking ship or whatever you can think of, the familiarity is important so I like keeping it basic. Took some time to do some calculations. Pushing both Pokemon to level 50 in many cases results in matchups decided almost exclusively by Super-Effectiveness or STAB moves that aren't resisted (obviously strategy can overcome this, this observation is pretty in line with standard Pokemon). After taking the time to do the math, I see your point about scaling to 50 if your goal was to avoid needing to level up. This does introduce a major problems with the power of damaging moves
Power points are underscaled for this implementation. Late game, where powerful moves are present, is not a problem, but early-mid is troublesome as most moves are now 4HKO in any typical situation not involving hyper aggression, bulkiness, or STAB + Super-Effectiveness. You will want to check your move scaling, as a 60 power move was not meant to be used against level 50 Pokemon.
That being said, after pondering your implementation for a while, outside of the move issue it seems the way they leaned on levels as "difficulty" in these games does lend itself to grinding, as being even 3 or 4 levels below another Pokemon double-dips for base stats AND move damage calculations. This leads me to ask: how do you intend to create difficulty in your hack with levels effectively removed?
My initial reaction was to call you retarded because your underlying issue with "entitlement" in games raised a thousand red flags, but you do seem to have an interesting start to making the games a little less reliant on grinding twenty hours to face a difficult gym. It definitely allows you to use a Pokemon you caught in the route before a gym without any maintenance work.
That being said, what is to stop me from clearing the first half of your game with a Level 10 Pokemon?

Honestly to reduce grind I'd just add consecutive wild defeat XP multipliers. If the player keeps beating wild Pokemon, it's clear what you are doing. Just add an experience multiplier to consecutive wild battles that result in the wild Pokemon fainting. Reset the multiplier if the lead Pokemon changes outside of battle or the player battles a trainer. Boom, grinding time cut down without needing to fuck with level scaling (and still works even with switch-training). No need to mess around with all these under-the-hood systems.

The first time I accidentally EV trained was interesting, my Cloyster started gaining 4 or 5 stat points in defense every level and I thought that was fucking rad. I had no idea how that number = less damage, and I had no idea it came from the fact I happened to be grinding high level gravelers and onixes for the fast OHKOs.
It didn't really matter anyways. The layer of separation from code to player meant there was no concern about minmaxing.
Hack devs can't help themselves - decades of nerds grinding statcalcs and Smogon renders them incapable of using less than ALL EVs in important encounters.
Players can't help themselves - they feel like they NEED to maximize stats to answer devs adding computer-side advantages, due to this approach being normalized in online and challenge-oriented gameplay.
Quit relying on invisible systems that were my intended to be specifically targeted for grinding for minmaxers. Spread out EVs on NPCs, hell even randomize the distribution and just set a quantity pool. Favor good allocations on harder trainers (leaders, aces, elite four), and leave enough space for surprises when nerds try to use a calculator to win battles.
Build systems that discourage reading 100 page guides, with surprises but not fucking blowouts requiring specific solutions. It's really that easy. You don't need EVs/IVs, stop going out of your way to use them if it requires EVERYONE warps their gameplay to address their presence.

My level 10 is a level 50, which shows my point - I don't have to raise my pokemon at all. I can catch a shitter in route 1 and use him in the elite four while he's still level 4 - after all, he's "really" level 50.
You also failed to address my move power discussion. If you are performing calculations as if the pokemon is level 50 but still keeping move strength low, you're looking at 4+ hits for even average pokemon to go down.

Yep, the trick is just having a road map where you're happy to be done if you never proceed. My big milestone is just having individual Maps for each route for purchase. Extra functions are second string and most likely in the to-do list for after release. But it's good to have an idea of a wishlist while setting up so you can code in a manner that enables those eventual features if possible so you minimize rewriting in the future.

Allow me to be as flat as possible so you understand what exactly I am saying. Try to read it this time.
Moves available to low-level Pokemon typically have lower power. As a result, the damage calculation in the early game will be kneecapped as moves with only 50% or less of the power of late game moves will deal 50% of the total damage. You have not accounted for this in any way with your Pokemon who has a level 50's HP. Scaling the damage calculation JUST for level doesn't fix this.
Further, the issue stands that a level 4 Pokemon will have the SAME STATS as a level 50 Pokemon in your hack. If the Pokemon has been with you a long time (a VERY LONG TIME, Mr. "I don't like grinding"), it will have functionally different stats. That is the only reason that a level 4 and level 40 is different. And if you state the Pokemon would benefit from the levels for evolution and movepools, you once again are looking at grinding because you STILL need your Pokemon to undergo the level-up process in order to hold its own against higher-level Pokemon. Further, you can stop leveling a Pokemon the instant it evolves / learns a specific move, meaning there's actually NO benefit to continuing to use a Pokemon outside of a perhaps 5-10 stat point increase. You could box a Beedrill at level 10 and bring it back out in Gym 8 and be fine. This is fundamentally ill-conceived.
I've been saying this since the beginning. You do not want a traditional Pokemon game. You want Stadium, where you can pull Pokemon out for specific battles, then toss them back until the next relevant matchup and rapidly switch between teams to suit specific matchups.
I commend your efforts to cut out any and all grinding. I understand the underlying motivation. But you are being willfully a cunt even to people who have a few relevant points for why your system has issues.

YIIK's developer didn't implement an anti-speed up measure.
Not even the most legendarily narcissistic directors of all time tried to keep their DVDs and VHSs from playing nice with fast forward.
You can't make an argument for speed up without outright stating "I don't trust my players to play my game properly, and it bothers me immensely if they don't play it properly" quietly or out loud.
Some of the greatest RPGs, when re-released, include speed up functions. The people who added these features trust players not to ruin their time with the story or the gameplay.

I feel like hack creators shouldn't be allowed to just release a beta and then do nothing with it for years. Shit is maddening. Take a page from a real hack creator's book and wait until your game is finished to release it or release a very short demo that maybe has the first gym in it. Essentials just uses raw image files, I don't think there is any place where you just change the palette. Shinies have unique sprites as well.

Makes me turned off on playing romhacks. Having to keep track of all the vanilla game changes is already hard enough, so when romhacks are mix and matching mechanics from different gens I just can't bother trying to keep track of it all and I hate having to constantly consult with the docs. Stuff like phys/special split is easy, but things like what generation rules do these abilities follow? Is fairy type in? Are any moves changed to fairy type? Are there any changes to moves at all? What about types and abilities? Why do some abilities work as if they are gen 3, while others work as if they are gen 8? Pokemon learnsets? Stats?

It's all so bothersome

None of those, 9bit is a branch that keeps updating constantly (and eventually they will merge it with the main one). You need to build the 9bit rom yourself, or you can go to their discord where people sometimes post the compiled roms.

I think a lot of starting hack makers think that a hack has to be at the level of these others that have had 5+ years or 10+ people working on them. It's easy to want to make great sprites, excellent scripts, breathtaking maps, and strong coding / mechanical fixes and updates. The issue is getting good at even ONE of these will take years, and they don't realize that "ok" is acceptable (and as another anon said recently, if your shit is any good you'll have people asking to work alongside you to fix things in the future, so just getting it on paper is worth more than anything else.

I don't think as many Pokemon as you think are easy shifts to dark, outside of canon "Pokemon used by the evil team", really the only culprits are part-poison (which makes sense, since poison just kind of became the de facto evil type).
If we're going by GFs canon choices with regional forms, Raticate, Persian, and Muk are the only three they saw fit to "correct" in this regard, and all three are just "evil" pokemon.
The dark identity continues to be a weird one. I personally just view Dark typing as either malicious intent, or "cheating" through trickery. Basically the other side of the coin from Fairy's whimsical prankster aspect.

Could go any direction. Parasect is similar, but it's Bug/Grass, most likely just to explain the host and loosely assign a "plant" identity to the mushroom.
It's really a toss up, honestly. Pokemon loves to just also dex text on everything about how they "scatter poisonous/toxic spores", which leads me to believe they're just hackily trying to justify a typing they've already received. Butterfree, for example, has basically NO information except that its wings have "poisonous scales" and that it's a butterfly.
It's really tricky. I'd also wager they had even more poison types in the original pass, just going off any dex entries from the first gen (I am just taking English entries though so it's possible I am retarded depending on if this is just a localization issue)

I always took fighting to just be insane prowess at physical attributes, basically the "I'm an expert at X" upgrade to normal types. Fighting, to me, was always an accessory to whatever elemental / supernatural / magical abilities you may try to staple in a pokemon.
That being said, getting so fucking mad you DIE is fighting type. But getting stronger the more someone wails on you? Textbook Dark type. Primeape is just really a mess for game design, so fighting is more than enough.

In the old days dark pokemon were pretty edgy and primeape is a perfect candidate for dark.
I mean really, this thing is a big sad dog that "loves playing with children" in the pokedex, it's dark for some reason.

Is there any version of Renegade Platinum that doesn't have the Fairy type stuff? I like a lot of the changes being done with this, but I draw the line at modifying the pokemon themselves. The Classic release removes most of the fanfic mon changes, but if I'm going to have an authentic Gen 4 experience, the Fairy type has no place there.

I like the shadow of the railway, but the color could be better (a darker pink instead of grey onthe road for instance). The buildings don't need shadows, it looks bad. There is a bit of visual clutter, but it could easily be toned down without losing much of the charm.

the idea of "evil"-types being straight up evil is already disproven a dozen times over in the anime and games by the existence of people on friendly terms with dark-types
it's pretty obviously meant to be just a sinister/mischievous type and evil is just the word they went for since it's short
