looking back at the DP it looks as if they wanted it to end there. all the ingredients were there and they were introduced into the story, but for whatever reason last minute they changed it.
mean, Dawn was ready to go home with Ash, Ash vs Cynthia was always "the big battle" they teased, the story lead us to believe this was "the big one", and finally the way they ended DP seemed like a "yeah we did not have a choice" type of moment
I mean even in JN they went back to the "DP" timeline and kept it to the end of JN
