Having him hang out with a bunch of kiddies like 40 years younger than him is just awkward.
Plus he's canonically old and busted and washed and up and tired and bored so you can't even play the mentorship angle. It's why you sometimes see Iris. Because she's younger so the other adults Champions can have that sort of interaction.
In that regard it's also why you rarely see Leon on these type of things, he's way too isolated as a character. And he's too much of a non-character as well. What kind of interaction you'd have him have with the other Champions? Haha I'm da strongest Champion because Ishihara says so and you all suck? Let's have battle waku waku (which you can do with any other Champion) or lol I got lost lmao and all the other Champions got exasperated thanks to that.

Lance's a glownigger, dragon autism but is also the serious one, Steven has rock autism, Wallace is a flamboyant faggot but also has to rein Steven's autism, Diantha's an actress and celebrity, Cynthia's a giga dork and history autist.
Lance, Steven, Wallace, Cynthia are from nip regions. Steven and Wallace are bff. Diantha is from euro region but she's Cynthia's bff too so she gets added into the bunch. Steven was on XY anime too so that's another reason to add Diantha to the group. Also, Megas connection with ORAS+XY.
It's not about fujobait, otherwise Leon would be there too. It's all about having interesting character interactions and a tight core cast.
