Gen 5's soft reboot killed everything. Bad anime, no returning pokemon from last gens (replaced by clones), no remake, no pokemon stadium-like game, awful TCG (BW base set included no new mechanics beside full arts) etc...

Yes.
All the rest is wrong, not the TCG part tho. I am a 1990 boomer who lived the Pokémania and end up loving BW/BW2 and Unova even tho when the first leaks got released I acted like a genwunner. I also used to dislike gen 4 since it was "new" to me and back then I stopped caring about Pokémon since I was an adult already with other hobbies and occupations.
Gen 6 was the downfall of the games with gen 8 being the real problem.

I think splitting franchises into "classic and modern" just doesn't work because of how many changes occur over the years.
Gen 3 may not fit in with something like Gen 9, but it sure as hell doesn't fit in with Gen 1 either. It's like considering Sonic Adventure 2 a classic Sonic game
There are multiple eras that the franchise can be split into, each gen could be considered its own era.

Put gen 6 in flux and you're right. I think it's more important to delineate the 3D separation with mechanical and design changes than just graphics. Kalos is still designed and controls with a movement grid, while gen 7 shook up everything but the battles because of the free-moving overworld and set us on the path for shallow world design. Also,

Gen 5 was Pokemon's great filter. Turns out, a lot of people got filtered because they couldn't use their precious Pikachu, so it hasn't missed a game since. Ironically, a lot of the same people who hated B/W for not having oldmons until postgame are now completely a-okay with new games not having certain Pokemon AT ALL in them.

I desliked the leaks, but I tried White and enjoyed it. The problem is, the majority of faggots crying never touched it. See the discordfags always seething about Unova, they never played the game either, they started with XY or even after.

Almost as if that wasn't the issue at all and BW's distribution is just atrocious.

>trainer teams have very little effort put into them and typically just use the same stuff that appears in grass nearby
>cooler mons are shoved deeper into the game, which hurts even more because BW is very linear

For most people, that absolutely was the issue. Generally speaking, pokemon distribution isn't brought up that often as a negative for gen 5, because it's pretty much on par with the games before it. (Gen 6 was when they started to go nuts with the the distribution of 'mons)
