The present should not, and evidently DOES NOT overwrite a LONG history of it actually working. Much of this needs to be reformed in the modern era to remove corruption, but it has worked in the past.

Humans are also not the only creatures to develop empathy. It's shared across the great apes, and even in tigers of all things.

The suicide rate is skyrocketing because we've developed a system which often socially punishes helping others, a complete contradiction to the religion that made the west great, and the evolutionary responses which said religion exploited so that we were kind.
