It's less protected by "Gen 1 nostalgia" and more by "Morimoto used it to debug the games so it's actually a decent Pokemon, which means people will like it". As it stands, it's some wack shit, I like it. But I also like Chandelure which is apparently a controversial opinion to some. It's not even the worst object mon in Gen 5, guys, come the fuck on.

Voltorb works on a meta level (Gen 1-2 overworld item sprite). It’s a fun play on the more traditional mimic (Gimmighoul) that works due to the limitations of earlier hardware and the industrial theming of Gen 1. I’ve always wondered if the item sprite or Voltorb came first, though.

Is there a single situation where Psyduck would ever be a good choice?
