My only problem with RR is that it doesn't do anything new gameplay wise. It's just taking Game Freak's stock mechanics and packaging the experience for single player, which definitely has its value, but it means there's no point in any other romhack if they also refuse to do anything new but for whatever retarded reason ALSO refuse to make the game take any effort to beat.

RR is fine but the fact it's become a standard to judge by was a mistake. Every symptom of bad gameplay design seen in the modern scene can be traced to radical red. This isn't the fault of the game itself, the issue is radical red was SO popular that it brought a lot of people into hacking that weren't previously present and introduced the decomps to the wider world. Romhacks went from niche hobbyists to people who come massive channels like Pokemon challenges. While new blood is typically fine, in this case it was a net loss to the community. The features present in RR have become standard and widespread due to the ease of access of decomp tutorials. Nobody needs to spend dozens of hours sourcing sprites and entering data to have every available Pokemon in their project. This ease of access coupled with increased popularity really fucks with the quality of public projects.
So there's nothing wrong with Radical Red. There's everything wrong with people who came to hacking ONLY because of Radical Red. It's like expecting a good product from someone who's only played Sword and Shield, but on the other side of the fence. Hackers who come from Radical Red will make MORE Radical Reds, almost without exception.
And THAT is the problem. Because you can only do so many "le difficulty hacks!!!" before it gets dreadfully boring and it becomes obvious they cannot tell a competent story or invent / rework mechanics.

regarding rom hacks that have an original region and new story, obviously unbound, gaia, vega minus, clover have all been mentioned ad nauseam so i won't mention them again
an underrated hack i've played is orange islands (gba), really well-made imo although i've heard pokemon orange on the gbc is even better
i enjoyed pokemblem too, a fire emblem hack but you use pokemon, had a lot of fun playing that
idk, it's so rare you get a completed hack that you enjoy basically any that you can play through, and guys like hacksrepairman who fix old hacks and make them playable fully (finished dark violet, sienna, azure horizons etc.) are a godsend

I'm sort of feeling this but with Polished Crystal. It's not as severe, and still way less feature bloated, but my big problem is how same-y everything feels. Coral does not provide a new game experience at all since it's just 1:1 with PC, and that's the most popular Gen 2 hack right now. Doesn't bode well for the future.

I mean, in general accessibility to features is what limits their prevalence in new hacks. If someone busts the ability to save multiple save files while remaining within the requirements for flash memory, you bet your ass every hack afterwards will have that functionality if it's ever isolated into a clean fork. People in general want to work with the "most complete" version of something, then pare down. The issue is a lot of newbies won't pare much at all, or contribute meaningful new code themselves. They're basically the hit-and-run crowd of the hacking scene.
That being said, things appear to be improving. Larger scale, longer-term projects are starting to come to fruition, and so much of the code has been properly mapped and updated to modern practices that I think we are just around the corner from some neat new stuff.

Would you bother with finding ways to make pokemon seem unique / individualistic? What extent would you go to? I personally believe simply species + nature is more than enough.
Could you justify EVs? The original intention was to make pokemon you train stronger and offset things like rare candies, but the impact is so low until late in the game and that makes it even WORSE when you try to pick up a Pokemon after the 6th/7th gym. Would you implement some sort of effort system that worked better, or abandon that altogether?

I think it's probably the most 'balanced' of any smogon hack/difficulty option because the dev seems to have some rudimentary grasp on how Pokémon difficulty in single player works and doesn't employ any obnoxious RNG fishing fights or double battles that pull out the first cheese strat you see when opening Weedletwineedle's YouTube channel. Importantly it's actually super easy to set up new team members vs other games that in an effort to seem 'organic' force some of the shittiest ev grinds imaginable on you (Unbound). No evs/ivs mode also exists if you just don't want to care about it. The mon curve is definitely 'higher power' than other hacks, difficulty or otherwise, but you're given all the tools to make monstrous mons yourself so it balances it fairly fine until the E4 starts tossing Legends at you.
The main point that detracts from it is that it makes very little non-gameplay changes to Kanto so it's just running through the same region again except harder.

I don't know if it's a perfect solution but the way Legends Arceus handled EVs/IVs was significantly better than how the mainline games do, with EVs being more similar to the Gen I and II method and IVs only being used for how many EVs you start out with. That way IVs are still beneficial because you have to grind less, but you're no longer completely fucked over if you have a mon with subpar IVs.

The entire point of them existing is to differentiate pokemon so they don’t all have the same stats. Issue is when variance exists in any game players will try to get the most optimal outcome. If you hide the numbers then players will get annoyed and figure it out the same way they always did, and besides any harder hack requires MinMaxing most of the time. If you don’t have them then you need some alternative form of customization and end up with something like Tectonic’s style points where the system is shallow and every Pokémon that isn’t shiny is the exact same.

If you have a alternative, please suggest it, otherwise stop bitching.

I'm not a huge fan of the puzzlebox design style when it comes to Pokemon, I more like to pick up 6 Pokemon along the entire playthrough since it's more fun to me. It's not exactly hard to get to that point but the "early game" before you start to get the tms and coverage to let you actually do that is a huge slog and lasts like a quarter of the game. It's an awful intro to a game that is still just FR Kanto at its core. The fact that -most- of the non-boss trainers aren't any harder than vanilla doesn't really help and gives the feeling of weird difficulty spikes along the way.

I read the thread on grit and candies but the inherent issue is that those are just IV’s you can manipulate and thus will all get maxed out. Putting a cap how many you can have means that you just invented EVs again. I’m not seeing any meaningful change that justifies making the pokemon damage calculator useless

Yes, and this is just something existing for the sake of existing. It doesn't do anything other than make some Pokémon bad or good, and if you think easily modifying EVs is the solution, then you're going for a bad gameplay-contextual flavour. Having variable learnsets would be a far more interesting and natural way of differentiating Pokémon while having endgame solutions still feel natural.

Simple. For my example we will combine all additional stats over the base stat into a number called "Trained Stat". I'd make a new page in the Pokemon's info to hold this info to avoid cluttering the stat page. I'd have the base stat here as well for ease of info. Basically a totalling sheet for all numbers that make up the stat. Would also add the stat assignment interface.
>IVs
Now generated based on Nature. Starts practice stats at a certain amount above and below corresponding to the nature. For example, +15 to one stat, -15 to another, with the baseline start at 0.
>EVs
Earned by feeding berries. Berry growth cycles are accelerated by defeating, catching, hatching, leveling, and evolving Pokemon. Maybe berry pots in your pocket like FRLG. Natures double gains from berries for the beneficial stat, and halve those from the detrimental stat.
>Practice Stat
After a set number of stat points being assigned, cannot assign any more. Negative stats count in this calculation, meaning you can distribute a few more points to other stats or just get the negative one to zero.
Boom, individual pokemon, you choose their growth, you have a clear way to accumulate stats, you can bank them for new party members, you can do some fun tricks with numbers depending on how you set it up.
It's not flawless but I think it's a good way to adapt most of what we've seen and keep things familiar while improving the base.

Any tips on how to approach the level curve and route diversity when designing a game? Trying to add good variety even to earlier routes is difficult without giving the players too good of a team early on. And so far I've just been copying Platinum's gym levels, which probably won't work with a different amount of trainers and story between gyms.

Depends on how autistic you want to get.
You could total the possible XP from all predetermined battles (trainers, etc), and cross-map that to loose levelling requirements for teams of 3-6 pokemon. It won't be perfect because there's a great variety of levelling curves in different species, but you can at least get an idea of "I jumped 10 levels in this part in the trainers' parties, but even the player's quickest levelling pokemon won't keep up unless they drop down to three pokemon"
All you can do is get a general feeling, it's impossible to get the level curve perfect unless you're very careful. GF approached this with pokemon requiring less XP to level up in the early game (distributing Pokemon that leveled quickly towards the front end) to give you a chance to experiment, and gave you hard-to-level pokemon sparingly until after the midpoint of the game.

If you make a lookup table for species and level, the equation goes quickly. Only thing that may take some time is creating the data sets (the actual Pokemon and levels), but the tool itself should be pretty painless. I believe cave of of dragonflies has most of the lookups on their page regarding experience points. There's also some guys site out there, forget the game, who has a calculator online for single values. You could request the code from him and fit it as a function call for each Pokemon in the data set if you want to minimize time spent building the actual calculator.
you could also get your hands very dirty and change the experience classification for all Pokemon to be less use cases to better forecast leveling, but again that's getting awfully autistic and messing with leveling curves of individual pokemon may upset some purists

EVs become micro rare candies a la Go's candy system
IVs still make each Pokemon unique but can be overcome, no dead rolls
Negative rolls actually let you have free stat allocation in exchange for that random downside
It's an improvement, trust me. It's not as simple but it's way more intuitive and visible without turning into a number sheet sim like the OP image (the entire point of this discussion)

Since we’ve been talking about changing the EV/IV system how does /vp/ feel about making a Pokémon’s total EV cap based on its base stat total/tier? Weaker Pokémon lines get higher total EV caps. Pokemon Tectonic. Every pokemon has three traits and a like/dislike they reveal as you increase their friendship. This has no effect in battle but it does ad some flavor to each pokemon. I got two pokemon that like tax evasion and a nidoking that's basically a /toy/ user. The game is a mixed bag since it's one of those rebalance fangames that changes everything to make every pokemon viable (but ends up making furfrou of all things busted as all hell), but this feature is 100% good fun

Note that a pokemon's stats in the official games are determined by (((Base stat x2) + IVs + (EVs/4) xlevel)/100) + 5. You'll notice the variable values, IVs + EVs, add up to +94 to that stat at level 100. Dividing these by 2 gives you 47 and applying that to a pokemon's base stat directly means that the change to the underlying math is minimal, which i think is important.

How does this sound as a alternative? It still gives a incentive for breeding or looking for good TVs but it doesn't effect the cap you can reach. Most pokemon really only care about 2-3 stats anyway. Note that having a variable cap on how many TVs you can give a pokemon by training gives weaker pokemon more rounded stats. Possibly the cap per stat could be adjusted as well for some especially weak pokemon.

TLDR: DVs/Stat Experience/Larc EVs but with a cap that doesn't punish you for finding something like a tyranitar with a nonzero special attack.

It answers the issue of bad rolls but still has the same limitations as the original EV system. You really could just make IVs add to EVs on catching instead of being static numbers and remove the 4-fold division, and you have the same system without calling it a new name. Hell, you could easily wrap up the change in two lines of text in-game:

I think there should still be an element of adaptation required from the trainer/player, but canning it into unchangeable RNG is kind of shit as the outcome is the opposite of the intention (casuals don't give a shit / don't notice, hardcore players will genuinely reroll catches if they're autistic enough)
I'm pretty sure as much as they cope that individual/effort values are a solution to make "each Pokemon unique", I'm 100% certain the entire system was created in response to issues introduced with the speed stat

I'd personally hack out IVs from the player, leaving EVs, and add randomized IVs to trainers. Tightened ranges of possiblity for stronger trainers (for example, E4 Pokemon are exclusively 28-31 IVs).
There, still some variability for the player in the singleplayer arena, still can fuck around with speed in the EVs for multiplayer, and you don't get dabbed in by bad rolls on your end. The player still feels powerful, but the challenge ramps up as you get more chances to train your Pokemon.

The thing actually annoying me the most in hacks is overpopulating the grass with as many Pokémon as possible. I think Radical Red does this and it just feels random. Also gives me indecision paralysis / apathy, when I have so many mons available my choices stop feeling like they matter.

Blaze Black 2 usually put mons that would help you in the next gym so it felt like Drayano did it on purpose, I like that. (and the mons at said gym would aptly be prepared to fight whatever you caught... it stuck with me how I thought I was smart for training a Magnemite for the poison gym, but it was a bait and Koffing murdered me with fire blast)

Yes, because of the sheer amount of variety and the fact that those areas and Pokemon exist in the base game already, what an observation. Radical Red still lets you go into Diglett Tunnel to catch a bunch of ground types for Lt. Surge, there's just more there now than only Diglett
Maybe try hooking yourself up with some anti autism meds and catch what you like and stick with it

In somewhat related news, I'm happy playing Pokémon Classic since it only includes the original 151 mons in the Emerald engine, really enjoying the smaller curated list of mons in routes.
Some routes don't even have new mons or just 1-2, so you can progress fairly quickly, not much downtime catching / training multiple critters.
Only problem is that it's not really a difficulty hack, but surprisingly I've blacked out like 5 times by the Misty gym. Just avoid grinding & go through routes / caves without running back to heal like a Pokébitch, and you eventually end up dead or at least win scrapping by. Ended up beating Misty's lvl 21 Starmie with a lvl 16 Ivysaur as the last survivor, that was nuts.

I've always been in the camp of giving players options, but if they're gonna get technical / make them spend too much time in a screen that's not the overworld or a battle, give the option to have it be handled automatically. Then give the opt-in for the autists so they can get under the hood when they want. Everyone is happy.
The original IV/EV system ironically perfectly does this, even if designers may disagree with the implementation it clearly worked. I remember noticing that some of my Pokemon had lower stats when I caught them compared to others on the same route, and I once accidentally EV trained a Cloyster (I didn't know that was what I did until years later, but when it gained +4 defense in a level up I was blown away since I'd never seen such a big stat increase). Nothing detracted from my experience, and it wasn't until my sweaty friend wanted to battle that I even bothered leaning what IVs and EVs are
That being said, we are in a state of transition. Where previously predominantly autists made hacks due to the esoteric nature of the tools being used to binary hack, the advent if the decompilations enables even the most normie of normies to participate. This clash of values is what you see even now.
I have nothing to offer in the subject, just how I've seen these communities and discussions shift over the last couple decades.

The people who need them are autists who instead of maybe trying a different strategy or swapping up their team decide to fight hundreds of Pidgeys to increase a speed stat after sorting through dozens of caught Pokemon to get optimal stats in the first place. This is one thing tectonic did that I like, they flat out tell you that someone else completed the pokedex 8 years ago and as a result you start the game with every Pokémon seen and their listing telling you where to get them right there in game. You still get rewards for catching Pokémon yourself but just seeing the Pokémon’s move pool, base stats, location where you can find them, etc. is available in game and searchable. The master Dex is easily the best QOL feature of any Pokémon hack because it replaces the one thing every player wants but no one wants to make, a strategy guide.

The bigger problem also imo is that when people look at spreadsheets, it's for things like fights and enemy teams because people can't be assed to actually lose and retry new fights, they have to do them like they're running some gay ass challenge run or nuzlocke. The funny thing is that Tectonic also includes a mechanic like that, where you can rematch enemy teams until you 'perfect' them for better rewards and I'm sure people still just look up enemy teams anyway.

Unless you're building a difficulty hack it pretty much doesn't matter in the slightest because in most normal scenarios you're given enough wiggle room to win with comps that don't have perfect stats and things aren't coming down to you losing a speed race. If you're building a difficulty hack on the other hand you should provide players with less painful ways than vanilla to make sure they don't get reemed because they only have 28 ivs in speed (no iv/ev mode from RR is almost perfect but has the knock on effect of making certain things worse).
in either case the player should have some method of changing natures in my opinion.

If you're getting buttfucked by not having a perfect speed EV/IV mon - why not look into a dedicated speed control mon, or a Tailwind user, or some strategy to buff your speed without sacrificing too much? A good hack should give access to things like this within reason and give the AI reasonable answers to it. Stats are pretty damn flexible at the end of the day due to how big the modifiers are.
As for damage calculators, honestly fuck em too. The nuzlockers themselves can make that shit, and you shouldn't be designing your game to where people will by default run a challenge run on it. Maybe add a few more routes/areas or something if you're trying to appeal to a nuzlocke audience or have a good variety of types if you want to appeal to monotypefags but don't go full retard like the Black 2 Kaizo creator who explicitly is looking for clout through nuzlocke streamers.

The fuckable Pokemon are buffed and have broken custom moves.
The graphics are a Frankenstein of sprites from gen 3 to 5. Mixels are everywhere. Many of the custom sprites can't be called pixel art and are better described as low resolution drawings.
The demo is only up to 3 gyms.

But, the sex scenes are good enough.
There's a room where you can rewatch sex scenes.
The fights are decent challenges even with your overpowered waifumons.
Some nice QOL features like signs on routes telling you the wild Pokemon there.
The developer is active and adding new waifumons based on feedback.

Overall, I rate this is a "good game if you're horny" out of 10

With that many max revives all of your pokemon will start struggling even if you can one shot them just because he can keep reviving his blissy when they drop. So the only option I can think of to beat him is recycle + leppa berry + recover + attacking moves to counter stall with infinite PP recovery.

I of course personally dislike some changes (Special Bug Flygon because heckin Garchomp exists and the tendency for every hack to buff the shit out of Vire and Mortar because they're popular) but I think it's still a fun and unique experience as opposed to classic.

Classic. Gamefreak may have made some mistakes in stat assignment but they're canonical so it is what it is. Any strength or weakness is shared with the opponent so it's fair game. If you find yourself playing a hack that NEEDS to change stats to make the game playable with the full dex, someone has screwed up the design of enemy battles. All Pokemon stats are the equivalent of a neutral nature by default.
There are five martial art schools in the game. Each school teaches a different "martial art" which focuses on a different stat. The schools have dumb names life "School of the Speedy Pikachu" and "School of the Defensive Snorlax". You can have your Pokemon get trained in a school. Training in a school improves the respective stat, but the school tells you that the Pokemon must choose to "sacrifice" a stat because focusing so much in one way of fighting means they have no way to train in another way. So if you make your Pokemon a Disciple of the Speedy Pikachu, then its speed is increased and you decide which other stat you decrease. The five schools would be available in the first five gym towns, and the corresponding gym would have Pokemon that emphasize that stat. I.E first gym focuses on Defense and has the school that lets you improve your Defense, the little dude at the gym's entrance warns you about Defense and tells you to use special attacks, etc.
Of course you can choose to go train in a different school at any time to change your Pokemon's discipline.

EV replacement:

There are tales of a legendary martial artist who reached enlightenment and now lives as an hermit with his Pokemon away from civilization. He lives in a post-game area and when you reach him he explains that he can realign the chi (EVs) in a Pokemon to focus on different stats. However he cannot create the chi, the Pokemon must earn it by himself through training. If you bring him Pokemon with max EV, then he can readjust the stat in any way you want, literally bringing up a window with the Pokemon's stats and sliders to change them.

I like the concept of Pokemon as Bosses. We've had SM Totems & UBs, SwSh Max Raids, PLA Alphas & Nobles, and SV Raids & Titans. Which one of these was the best from a gameplay standpoint? If Discord didn't exist, people would've just chosen to go to RelicCastle or something. If a server is to be made, having normal channels should be fine, but it should act more as a romhack showcase with each channel having discussion around a game in my opinion. It's hard to track what hacks are /rheg/ because people either start here and then disassociate with /rheg/ when they get popular, or they start here, get bullied, and then go to Pokécommunity.

I think either raids or totems do it best. Not necessarily the shield/barrier aspect, but having a greater HP stat and being able to use >4 moves really helps to balance out a 1v6.

For the brief time period I was in there, I noticed they went overboard with more channels dedicated to nonsense while there was only one "#romhacking" channel. If there's ever going to be a new one, you'd need to come up with a new channel list. I'm thinking there should be separate channels like #gen1hacking, #gen2hacking, etc. You could make separate, possibly age-restricted channels for #nudehacks and #nudeessentials and have only a #general for random discussion and the #politics channel. Rival who just wants to catch them all instead of doing gyms but still has to train to go to tougher areas/do whatever the equivalent of max raids are. Everytime you fight him he has an entirely different team comp barring his Ace. Mechanically you can have him use sleep and Para liberally, have clerics/lots of bulk, chip damage etc. Just stuff to sell whole collector angle.

That make sense, some instructions may have an ugly C translations (all the bit and rotate instructions) or a very few maybe impossible to translate (indirect jump) but at the end of the day it's all expressions, control flow and functions so it should be OK.

Also sloppily edited clothes on one sprite, despite the fact that character and game it referenced had her clearly naked.
Also changed broadly accepted by Touhou fandom nickname "Lolice" for PC-98 Alice Margatroid because they are scared of four letter word.

How do you change the palette of a pokemon in the crystal decomp? If I change it to rgb colors, change the color, and then make it indexed again I get an error and I cant find a pal file other than for the shiny version.

.pal files are the ones you should edit
.gbapal files are palettes converted to the format used by the GBA
.lz files are files compressed for the GBA

The latter two are generated from the first during compilation.

I got the dumb idea to essentially take Pokemon Masters concept of Pasio and cross it with BW2 World Tournament but expanded to more generations and toggles to add more (Gamecube would enable Wes, Micheal, and Cipher Admins. Masters would enable Lear and his lackeys. Legends would open the rift to Hisui. Potential to add characters and Pokemon from fan regions if possible)

But that leads me to asking what the limits to Essentials is and if this would be an impossible goal to attempt?

There's no limit to how many Pokemon you can add to Essentials, unless you...somehow brush up against your memory limitations. Wack alone has over 4000 Pokemon.
The reason most people haven't added every single Pokemon to an Essentials game is because fitting every Pokemon into a single game in a way that's remotely natural is hard, and because you still need to have people design sprites, mechanics/move effects, etc. which is underway but I don't believe is actually complete for Gen 9.

I see "Pokemon from Gens 1-x" a lot on descriptions, but I always read that as being a curated 386 from Gens 1-x.

It's low hanging fruit, but why can't Gamefreak fit them all on a Switch cartridge again?
I guess I'll browse the romhacking forums. I looked through the notable games pastebin and didn't find what I was looking for.
I'd ask here, as I'm sure people know. But I'm not exactly sure what I'm looking for, either. Just anything not in Kanto.

They can fit them all in the newer games. The problem is that they're anticipating a future release where fitting them all would be inconvenient with how their deadlines work, so they put their foot down in Gen 8.

This is exactly the same reason they don't make a game with all the regions, because aside from it being a stupid idea, it would take a bajillion years to develop it all especially with modern console graphics. Just look at what happened to FF7 remake

Actually the sprites at least are done, Anil/Indego has Gen 5 style animated sprites for (I think) all Gen 9 and before Pokémon. Not sure if those are publicly available tho or if he m/his friends cooked them up themselves and don’t want to let others use them.
