Empoleon is the epitome of Game Freak's overdesigning era. Torterra and Infernape look pretty cool, but Empoleon is such a "almost there, but not quite" kind of Pokémon. It pains me to say, but the only gen where every single final stage of the starter trio look decent is gen I. Every gen since then has at least 1 fumble.

The "Golden Era" is widely regarded to be the DS era. No one has ever used it to mean "I-IV", that's just the handful of retrofags that still exist trying to shoehorn in their irrelevant I-II gens into the best time to grow up with the Pokemon games (and don't forget that the same people who grew up with Sinnoh mostly grew up with Unova as well).
