Your list indicates an appeal in things that are based off things that aren't exactly draconic, so a creativity in their inspiration. Garchomp for example is a landshark with prehistoric dinosaur traits. It looks dangerous and untameable.
Tyrantrum is a dinosaur and is less popular because it is just a t-rex, but also not intimidating, just looks like a toy or cartoon character.
Dragons generally have to be edgy to be super popular; but also not *just* dragons, but something removed from dragons too; but also inherently powerful.
