Now I'm fully back into my TV anime bullshit after watching the AU movies. Moving onto Sun and Moon after watching XY -> AG -> DP in that order. It's probably fine, I doubt anything's going to spoil me for BW, if I ever get around to that.

So it turns out I actually watched 15 episodes of SM before switching to AG. I thought it was just a couple, but apparently I got lost in it, which is a good sign. My first impressions back then were basically:
>1. Wow, this looks really good when it's moving. Still shots don't really don't do it justice for how fluid it looks in motion.
>2. I can see why people who really liked what XY was doing hate SM. And being unanchored from the Gym plot to keep the structure, This was before Horizons aired and showed what that could look like.
>3. Lana sounds like Elmo in the dub, and I want to die any time she emotes. I'm watching the subs now to rectify this.

I'll rewatch through some of the episodes I saw as a refresher. If I have any major impressions, I'll post. I think I have a better sense of the "rhythm" of Pokemon seasons, so I think I'll enjoy it more.

Glad I missed the caption and got to be updated on the raid. Cool. Probably will see you guys again after they've tired out.

All the rumor and fama about what caused the transition is interesting in its own way. I've various things like the staff wanted an easier to draw show for a while after XY's use of 3D motion ruined their workflow, that they wanted a more cartoony series that could compete with Yokai Watch, and that TPC just didn't care after XYZ and "handsome Ash" didn't spike ratings. I have no idea if any of that has any merit, but It's kind of fitting that this was the series that found its way onto Disney in the US.

I think the ratings and YW theory are just bullshit, if they cared about "competition" or ratings things would've changed before then. What was a more likely case was just the switch in animation softwares because of the cheaper licenses. Iirc Iwane used to complain about that switch in softwares, which underlined that theory a bit. Plus it seemed a bit easier to outline that.

The shows has multiple sponsors and collabs with their business partners for their fundings not just TPC alone, But I don't think there was a giant pullout of sponsors considering it's Pokemon. Outside of the Yajima shitposts, there were more shows stacking up in OLM's production so they had less hands available for Team Kato onward. And there was a lower amount of massive outsourcing for episodes compared to JN's runtime. The license things seems more likely because in the end why not save up expense by using a software with the same functions? Plus the artstyle was probably more to be in tune with the more comedic shift.

Since Ikemen Ash from XY series is gone, I wonder what kind of personality Serena need to deal with genki Ash from SM-PM series. Since SM/PM Ash does not act as princely as XY Ash.

Believably Ash should have been more like Ben Tennyson from Ultimate Alien. still cocky and obnoxious but maintains his competence and maturity. Ben's relationship with Julie also changed a lot after Alien Force where Julie slowly became more sassy and started lashing out on Ben. I wonder if this is what going to happen with Ash and Serena. Off course Julie eventually could not put up with Ben and break up with him which makes me wonder what was the point of all their development with their relationship.

For the person in the previous thread, Kenny actually only beats Ash once, the Empoleon vs Buizel battle at the end of DP.

In his debut Pikachu battles Prinplup, but the match is stopped inbetween because of Team Rocket. In the second one his Breloom battles Turtwig, and then when Ash sees Breloom using Energy Ball he wants Turtwig to learn it...so they stop battling in the middle. Turtwig took some damage but wasn't on the verge of fainting and was still battle ready.

Kenny only beat Ash once.

It's got nice pacing (for a post-BW2 arc, probably the best so far), cozy atmosphere, and makes some decent adjustments/additions to characterisation to fan favourite characters.
Plot still has the fatal flaws of the game one, but definitely pulls some strings to try to weave the post-game and DLC content together to make it one cohesive plot that attempts to improve or clarify the rationales and characterisations behind it. Still feels slightly inadequate in some regards.
I think some of the sideplots that Kusaka wants to implement aren't well-articulated such as Pier's town going to shit and Marnie being sent to do the Challenge Cup to help the town from not getting shittier or Hop looking for a good reputation without using his brother as a crutch , feeling like synopsizes of what he actually wants to write, even if they are interesting and would give the side characters a lot more to do and say.
Hopefully, volume additions will address these issues in the far future.

The difference is Ash lost to Drew in early Hoenn, with Taillow when it was still a new capture and weak.

The battle with Kenny happens literally 2 eps before the Sinnoh league, with a Buizel who beat tons of Gym leaders and was always shown strong at that point. There's a very clear difference, I don't care how strong Kenny's Empoleon might be.

Buizel losing that late reminds me of how Corphish lost against the Nurse Joy in the Battle Pyramid area right before the final Brandon rematches. The writers basically said, "Which pokemon is unevolved on the cast that we can show lose this late?" and both Buizel and Corphish happened to be unevolved so that's probably why it happened.

I'm really mad the way the writers turned Piplup into a pokemon that gets abused like a butt-monkey joke in later DP. It definitely was not treated like this for the first 80% of the series. It started due to Ash's Gible Draco Meteor constantly crashing into it, and then in the Buck episode, Piplup is constantly being attacked by wild pokemon getting hurt or blown all over the place.

If Piplup was written like this for all of DP I would have hated it, thank god it's only in like the last 10% of the series

Honestly I found that trick pretty cool, even though it doesn't make much sense since it would mean her arm would look a lot longer with Ditty (fake hand) attached to it. Blue had partial information on the Elite Four and was using Yellow as a way to collect more intel while she tried to look for Ho-oh (or "the bird"). Lorelei does use the handcuffs on Red when the Elite Four first ambushed him before the arc started. You know if BW just continued after DP left off, it would have been fine. Probably would not of topped DP (since it wouldn't have Paul, Hunter J, or Dawn/Contests, etc), but it would have been viewed as an fine season, probably similar to AG I suppose.

That semi-reboot they tried with Ash just completely killed the whole season. Trip probably would not have existed otherwise either. Iris and Cilan could have been written the same, and then just give us a better league and give Ash's Unova team proper development.

You know it's weird that Ash's Charizard has no appearance in the DP anime at all. This is a season where Ash decides to use old Pokemon in the league, and he doesn't think to use Charizard at all despite using him in the Johto league and Battle Frontier?

DP is actually the only series where we don't see a Charizard at all, not even from another trainer.

Ash vs Conway was great. I loved seeing Noctowl used properly, this is something the Johto saga never really did with it (it really just got Morty's Gym and that's all). It really proved how far battles have come when Ash's Noctowl of all things can look impressive battling. Donphan lost but that's fine, and Gible was great.

Also the end of the ep brings Gliscor back. For awhile I remember people thinking Gliscor was released like Ambipom and the writers wouldn't bring it back, thank god they made the right decision.

Anyone remember Ikarishipping being a thing in the fandom during DP? People were seriously shipping Dawn with Paul because of that scene Paul forgot her name at Roark's Gym when she exploded at him.

I can't believe that was a thing. Almost as dumb as the people shipping Serena with Clemont during XY. Ships nobody will remember in the fandom when those series ended.

So how do you feel about Paul using mostly different Pokemon in the league than the 6 on 6 battle they had? Personally I don't mind, but I really think Paul's Torterra at least should of been in the battle.

Monferno already beat Paul's Ursaring twice in previous episodes, so we didn't need to see Infernape beat it a third time. Ash also already defeated his Weavile. Staraptor/Honchkrow had their showdown in the Pokeringer episode and actually battled a lot in it to get the victory (even if it wasn't a traditional battle).

Ash never beat Paul's Magmortar, but I suppose it doesn't really matter. Torterra feels like a glaring absence though since it was Paul's starter pokemon. (as an aside what happened to Paul's Gliscor? After it beat Ash's Gligar it never appeared again)

Much like Ash, Paul had traveled through four different regions at this point, so he had reserves galore. Ash using the same set of six that he used before is a very Ash move; he's winning with the team that got him there, and he wants to prove that they're capable after they lost the last time. Paul thinks with strategy above all else, so planning for how to be Ash specifically required a different team. Of course, he still lost, but his decisions were fairly characteristic of Paul.

Finished the Ash/Paul battle, upon rewatching it, i guess it really was the best 6 on 6 in the entire anime. I think I'd probably place Leon's second right after it due to the strategy and finale. Third would probably either be Alan/Shota's, and fourth would be Cynthia's. I'm really surprised how good the animation also looked for eps that aired back in 2010, over 13 years ago.

Also 5th would be the Orange league, that 6 on 6 still holds up to this day despite some dated animation.

Another BW advertisement at the end of the Ash/Paul final episode. Again they don't show Ash in any of the previews, and just introduce Iris and Cilan. They REALLY wanted to make people think Ash was possibly not in this series.

Pretty much caught up to where I was when I switched to AG now. Kukui's a pretty cool father figure who can deal with Ash still being a retard who doesn't know how to do basic shit on his own. Mallow's probably my favorite of the students so far. Her personality is fun and she has good (affectionate) banter. Kiawe's also cool and I like his family. Lana is cute, but kind of boring. Sophocles is there. I'm sure they'll have their moments later.

Lillie's had a pretty basic arc, but it's an effective one. She can't touch Pokemon, but now after dedicating herself to taking care of the egg, it hatches into an Alolan Vulpix and she comes to be able to handle it through adversity. Now maybe it's because I love dog Pokemon, and Vulpix is one of my favorites, but I really enjoyed seeing this develop over six-ish episodes. The only thing I can really compare it to is the weird one-episode arc where Serena's Fenniken hates being dirty (only coming up in this episode), but walks through mud to save Serena from Team Rocket by the end of the episode. That ends up being a pretty favorable comparison for SM. It was built up well and resolved relatively quickly, but not completely. Lillie still can't touch other Pokemon, and I'd imagine that's because of some shit Lusamine did and will do again near the end of the series. Looking forward to it!

Ash/Tobias was good for what it was, both Sceptile and Pikachu were badass in it. My only gripe is Glalie was not used at all despite them teasing us with it. I also feel Bayleef/Totodile should of been used in some earlier match instead of just appearing in the first episode.

Torterra never did win anything since Candice's Gym besides beating Seviper/Carnivine a few times. Lost to Palmer and Bertha but it did fairly decently in those battles and scored attacks before losing. It lose the Paul 6 on 6, it did terribly in the Volkner battle (I honestly forgot how quickly it lost there to 1 ice punch in less than a few minutes), and in the Paul match it just did whatever.

Watching the last ep now, it feels weirdly nostalgic and I like the way it opens the way the first ep does. Matori debuts here and recuits TR for a special mission, sad we know this doesn't have any payoff but it was an interesting turn of events. This is also the last time we see Seviper, Yanmega, Carnivine and even Wobbufett for a long time.

Giovanni only ever appeared in 3 DP episodes. He was in the second DP episode, the one Jessie captured Yanmega and sent it to him, and he appears briefly in the final episode.

DP is over, all 191 eps done. The finale is really good and hits all the right emotional beats. The final sequence of Ash watching Flint battling Cynthia and imagining himself using Infernape still gives me the chills to this day, even though we now know how that turned out. Ash did become a champion master though, and Brock became a Pokemon doctor. Dawn never became a Top coordinator still though...whoops.

The goodbyes were good especially for Dawn. An oddity is Ash's Infernape does not even appear in the final DP episode. We see Torterra though and he beats Seviper/Carnivine as his final "redemption" I guess. You'd think Infernape would get some appearance in the final DP ep outside of the Flint sequence, but nah. Also odd for Dawn we only see her Piplup, Togekiss and Buneary, Pachirisu, Cyndaquil and Mamoswine don't appear this ep either. I got the image of Dawn and all her pokemon out from her BW cameo goodbye mixed up with this one.

I guess I'll watch the two specials next.

I'd probably still say its one of the best. The pacing may seem long but when you watch through it, it doesn't really matter. The last stretch of eps does have some filler in it but it's not overbearing or anything. I'd give DP a 9/10 overall. I can't say its perfect because:

1. Ambipom is released for no reason, and doesn't even come back for the Grand Festival. Just for what they did to Ambipom I can't say DP is perfect. It's easily the worst mistake they made in the series.

2. I don't think Torterra was treated as badly as people say it was, it still did well in its last battles, but I think it should have had one last moment of glory?

There are some other minor nitpicks, like Brock could have been utilized more, Gary should of shown up more instead of just 3 times, there were a few dull fillers from time to time, etc...but as I said they're the same flaws any of the series has, so it's not really worth bringing up. DP has a higher quality of good eps to poor eps than any other saga besides maybe Kanto.

As a whole it also felt like a definitive continuation/conclusion of the anime that started with OS and continued through AG, something all the later series don't quite feel like. The whole show could have ended right here.

Human makes small mistakes and Ash made a blunder. Its normal for all the people but self inserter can not understand that because their characters has to be flawless. Its because of self inserting manchild that writers are resort to safe writing that makes every character bland and tropey.

It should have been Lance, Drake, Steven, Brandon, Cynthia, Iris, Leon, and either Wallace or Alder or a wild card like Geeta or Professor Oak. An actual championship with no plot armor or protagonist bias getting in the way of the kino. Couple this with events in games across Nintendo IPs, especially 'picking teams' like how Splatoon and Pokemon Go do, and Pokemon as a franchise would have hit a considerable surge. Ash being there was just dragging it all down, sucking away all the kino and preventing marketing gold like this. But we've already known that for the last several gens.

First of all, every champion has their own fanbase and they gets angry if their favorite champion loses as proven by Master Tournament. The anime thought they could get away with Iris and Lance because one of them is inexperienced while other is just a placeholder for the actual champion on GSC/HGSS. Diantha is probably the only actual champion that got destroyed by another champion however she was known as the weakest champion. Leon's has his "Undefeated" plot armor that can only be beaten by the protagonist which happens to be Ash.

Even than, a battle between Leon and Cynthia will cause a backlash no matter who wins the fight.

The "Pokemon separated from Ash and co." episodes are always good. This one was no exception.

Now that I've gotten re-use to SM's art style, I really dig the animation. The Pokemon always looked fine stylistically, but the simpler shaping makes their movements look more fluid than I think I've ever seen. Character faces are also far more expressive than I think I've seen in any anime. Even when they're not being over the top for comedy (which is a lot) they avoid the faceless problem most anime have where a character has one expression for nine different emotional states. AG and DP certainly had a lot of very expressive shots too, but SM has is more consistently; at least once an episode I'm impressed by what they do.

A lot of/most people who like to speculate or make fanart of anipoke don't actually watch it regularly, or at least haven't since the Indigo League. They think the anime is basically Ash doing Gym badges every 10 episodes, fighting the evil people, having a girlfriend who does her own quest, and in the middle are adaptations of stuff from the games. So they come up with these episode plots where Ash does something neat with a game character, not understanding that the anime creates its own OCs to show off the new Pokemon for the series, and that most of the filler plots take place in a non-descript forest (or in DP's case, a flatland near Mt. Coronet) rather than, say, Saffron City, where there's a lot of cool stuff from the game. The one exception is maybe AG, where they do adapt a lot of the one-off game stuff into filler episodes (like the Winstrate family, or Mr. Briney and Peeko), but even then you've got dozens of non-descript forest/island episodes.

Source: Me, four and a half months ago, who looked at all this stuff and made the same dumb assumptions.

The Brock special after DP is excellent. His brother finally becomes official Gym leader, we get an excellent battle between Rhyperior and Nurse Joy's Latias (!), and we see Brock's parents again too. It feels like a great epilogue to all the Pewter Gym eps we had in the entire series (the original one, the special in AG, the Battle Frontier Pewter ep, and this DP special).

Also Brock's parents/family never do appear again after this, so this was their final appearance of the anime.

BW starts off fairly decently and actually held a lot of promise at the beginning, but as it goes it pretty much crashes around the 8th Gym leading to the league. The Plasma stuff gets delayed forever and the final arc is just filler.

So these are how the DP characters were sent off:

- Paul watches Ash lose to Tobias
- Barry just goes off after the last Sinnoh league ep
- Conway just completely disappears after Ash beats him
- Nando says goodbye to Ash after he loses, and goes off

- Zoey says she's going back to Snowpoint with Candice to celebrate her victory
- Kenny gets that episode he tries to make Dawn travel with her and she tells him off
- Ursula is just shown watching the last battle in the GF angrily, but we don't see her again after that.

- Reggie is shown watching Ash/Paul's match and enjoying the outcome
- Gary never appears again after the Galactic finale, it was his final appearance for 12 years till Journey's
- Cynthia battles Flint in the finale, we see her again in BW

Most of the other side characters pretty much disappear as it goes on, it's also easy to forget the whole Contest cast like Mr. Contesta, Sukizo, Momoan, the Sinnoh reporter crew all final appearances were the Grand Festival.

Gary and Paul are really the only rivals allowed to appear after their original sagas ended, the writers pretty much abandon everyone else besides silent cameos. Gary has that Kanto evergreen nostalgia like Misty/Brock where he could always pop up, and Paul was just too essentially not to show him one last time.

All the rivals for the female companions generally don't get anything after their arc ends, although I am glad Drew/Harley were shown both in DP's Wallace Cup watching May on TV and again in JN against Steven. It shows how much Tomioka favored them.

It's a terrible day for rain. I'm kind of impressed that they had the guts to go through with the Stoutland dying as viscerally as it did. I figured they'd spirit it away to a Pokemon Center never to be seen again or something. But no, even though it kind of disappears, there's no doubt about what exactly happened to it. Everyone, even Litten gets it. Magnificent use of rain to make everything colorless for a large portion of the episode as well. It really makes the reemergence of the sun and the rainbow pop all the more.

It just occurred to me that in the past eight episodes (SM015 to SM023), Team Rocket has only appeared in four of them, and only three of those times had them trying to steal shit; the Litten episode just involved Meowth trying to cheer Litten up after Stoutland's death. This is a fantastic change from XY. You get time to miss them, and they're not constantly redoing the same gag over and over again. SM's focus on slice of life/comedy really draws out the best of the TRio as well. All things remain to be seen, but so far this is my favorite iteration I've seen.

Are there any specials I missed up to the end of DP? I watched:

- Mewtwo Returns
- Legend of Thunder (Raikou special)
- All the hoso AG specials, including the two Winter Vacation ones
- The Dawn and Brock specials that aired after DP
- I watched all the Pikachu shorts for the movies as well, even the ones that didn't come out in the west

I know they made some Mystery Dungeon specials but those are non-canon to the Ashime obviously.

Only other specials I have noted are the Pokemon Rangers: Guardian Signs specials, which as far as I can tell are out of the Ash continuity anyway. Pokemon: Origins also aired during BW, and while they're not my favorite, they're worth seeing in parallel to the Ashnime.

First ep of BW, you can already tell something is "off" right from the start. The narrator says Ash is 10 years old right at the beginning (they never actually said he was still 10 back when AG and DP were airing), and Ash's eye pupil's are more brown now. The weird CG opening is unlike what they did before. Right from the start this feels almost like a reboot of the show (just that Ash is already a trainer and owns Pikachu, and we see Oak/Delia bring him to Unova). Team Rocket are re-introduced and we see Giovanni like this is his first episode.

Then Trip is introduced and everything goes to hell. I don't mind Iris so far.

Playing devil's advocate, one could say that they never age-dropped him in AG and DP because those first episodes began with May and Dawn, who were both referred to as ten years old. Still kind of bullshit, given how much time has been spent on the road, and the fact that Ash visibly ages over the seasons, but if you're in the mood to be gaslit, there's your rational explanation.

Seriously what were the writers thinking. We just saw Trip pick Snivy from the lab and confirm he is a beginning trainer. Ash challenges him to a battle the moment they're outside, and Snivy is dodging Pikachu's attack. I know Pikachu can't use electricity here, but that single Quick Attack that it hit Snivy with should of KO'd it. Then after that Pikachu gets hit by a Leaf Storm and that's it.

If you were watching this right after DP ended like most were at the time, you just watched Ash defeat Paul in one of the best matches of the show, and Pikachu tie with a Latios bringing it down only 2 episodes prior to this. This is where the "Ash loses to a Level 5 Snivy" memes started.

I mean even ignoring all the stuff that happens later on in BW, this is just such a bad first impression of a new series. It really felt like they had no idea how to continue Ash's character here after DP.

Finally, a gang war that makes sense. The problem with the TRio feuding with Team Magma/Aqua/Galactic/Plasma/Flare was that the latter groups all had to be competent in order to be a threat, so Team Rocket could never win until Ash beats the boss. With Team Skull, who are also a bunch of comedy losers, that's not a problem. They can actually trade wins and losses back and forth over the course of SM, and that makes things interesting. I can't wait for Guzma to show up and interact with Jessie and James. That shit's going to be hilarious.

Why? It's just a pikachu. No matter how experienced, he's a tiny little thing using a non-stab 40bp move.
Reminder that Ash's pikachu OHK'd a swarm of Spearow with a single attack on the first day. Even with a thunderbolt from the storm charging him, it still goes to show that the power scaling for fresh pokemon has never meant anything. I mean, just look at JN. Ash caught 5 fresh pokemon and overnight they became world champion contenders.

For example in the first Gym, Pikachu loses to Cress, Cilan's water brother. This doesn't bother me as much because you know this is a Gym leader, and even though his water monkey is unevolved you have no idea how long he had it (just as Cilan had his grass monkey for a long time and it never evolved to this day). So Pikachu's loss in the first Gym isn't as bad.

Early BW is decent so far, up to ep 6. The only thing I hated so far is the Ash/Trip battle which made no sense. As episodes themselves they're all fairly decent, like the Sandile one, the first Don George ep with Tepig, the Gym battle and TR's first mission with the dream stuff.

I think the problem with BW is just knowing how it goes on. If you view each episode in a bubble it's not so bad. If the awful Unova league didn't happen it would have redeemed some of the saga.

Snivy is a regional starter from a lab tho. You (usually) have to qualify to receive one of those. It knew a powerful grass attack as well, showing that it wasn't just your average pokemon from a beginning trainer.

Why do people find Iris annoying? In Japanese her voice makes her sound like a cute girl. She does have lines that sound very similar to things Kanto!Misty used to say, but it's not that different than stuff May/Dawn used to say to Ash either. I'm up to ep 9 now and don't mind Iris at all.

Iris was definitely overhated back in the day, and it was probably a byproduct of how Ash was written in BW. Like if Iris' personality was exactly the same written with any other Ash, you wouldn't have seen those same complaints.

There's also more payoff now. In ep 6 you have Axew dreaming of evolving to Haxorus, and in ep 9 the old woman tells Iris her goal is to raise Axew to a strong Haxorus. That didn't happen in BW, but now with JN we know she did it. So it feels like the payoff is there now.

The same exact reason people find Max annoying, both of them were a contradictory Know-it-all that behave that they are smarter despite being dumb themselves. BW series made it worst by refuse to acknowledge Iris anything dumb, downplaying Ash to make her look smart and handing her a freaking Dragonite.

She was voiced by Aoi Yuuki, off course she sounds like a cute girl. It funny how OLM picked one of the best VA for Iris while Serena is voiced by a literal-who. Even Serena's master's voice seems way better.

If it's anime Dawn, then realistically Goh. Dude has legendaries, he's objectively the strongest trainer in the world assuming Tobias got murdered. But Anime logic has always been bad, with shit like a Pikachu tanking 10 attacks and then reviving itself from a faint, so who knows, maybe Piplup would pull similar bullshit out of his ass.
