Norman back in Johto was a promising trainer, at the caliber where he could be running his own gym. Whitney on the other hand is a young and inexperienced crybaby of a normal type trainer - however, she is very cute. Norman’s a decade into his marriage, his wife’s getting older, and he happens to know this other normal-type trainer who just so happens to be into the dependable and strong feeling an older man gives off.
They fuck.
This hoes on for a while, with Norman hiding the affair under the cover of working harder so that he can get his own gym sooner, but eventually things start falling apart when Whitney gets pregnant. This throws a huge wrench in things - his wife starts suspecting what’s going on, and the potential scandal when it comes out is enough to destroy Norman’s career. So when that Normal Type gym position finally opens up in Goldenrod, instead of taking it, Norman instead moves his family all the way to the Hoenn Region to separate himself from Whitney’s pregnancy. But since he’s not a complete shithead and doesn’t want to fuck up Whitney's life more than he has already, he doesn’t want to just leave her with nothing. So he calls in some favours with the league, and the open Goldenrod position somehow ends up going to Whitney. He also gives her a strong pokemon he trained to help her out in her new position (and to help her out with breastfeeding if needed) in the form of her miltank.
So yeah, May has a pink-haired half-sister growing up in Goldenrod
