I like giving them fitting names to make them more distinctive and memorable and build some bond between us. Like, instead of thinking, "my salamence from SV did X", I say "saphira did X". Everything fits.

Azalea for Lilligant because it's a cute, elegant flower.
Kurtz for Vaporeon because Heart of Darkness. Wanted to name it Joseph Conrad but too many letters.
Sinatra for crocodile because it's a singing crocodile.
Mist Raven for Ceruledge because I like Sekiro and it looks edgy.

Usually just random names with the exception of mawile, which will ALWAYS be named Marcy.
I gave it that name ever since I caught a mawile for the first time as a kid playing Emerald and felt that it was a perfect name. Every mawile I've caught since then has that name.
Plus in a way it feels like I'm going through adventures across all these games with the same mawile that I first caught.

We did this with our cats growing up. They had other names that didnt stick, and everyone just called them "cat" or "kitty" and forgets the stupid name my mom or sister picked. And it was fine, cat loved it

Vp has been giving me anxiety about not naming my mons recently, so I have been trying to name them, but its hard, I get decision paralysis and then hate the name after. I end up just stream of consciousness assigning random words or even gibberish to them until something kind of fits. Id feel too retarded and cringe and tryhard naming them after anime or mythology or shit like that.

Am I suppose to name literally every mon I catch even if I dont plan on using them? Or just the ones I use? Because even then I still use a lot and then just rotate them out, thats a lot of names to come up with.

I don't anymore, but when I was a kid I did and I still remember a couple of them. I had a Jolteon named Gus, a Beedrill named Drillby, a Fearow named Arrow, and a Primeape named Vegeta. I had others too but those are the ones long sick to me even 20 years later.

I usually go for different themes in each game. In SV, I used Spanish and Portuguese names and words. Although I don't adhere that strictly to the theme necessarily and break it sometimes.

Also don't forget that in the newer games, you can always rename your mons and don't have to go to a specific NPC. So sometimes I name them the first thing I can think of, but change it later when I find myself disliking it. Or don't give them a name and do so later when I used them for a while.
Sticking to a theme definitely helps with the decision paralysis, though. You can also look up names on the internet, I like using 20000-names.com (which is a stupid sounding website, but it does exactly what it says and it's basically untouched since 2008 or some shit. So it's not infested with dumb baby and mom shit like every single other website about names)

yes but if Im naming them because I want to form a bond with them, it kind of deflates it if I rename them. Like if my mom called me up and told me they dont like my name anymore and are changing it

Eh, nicknames are a thing. My online friends use my online nickname IRL for example. And even with my real name, most people use the shorter form and don't even know that my real name is the longer form (think Mike vs Michael)
