Genuine question.

Is there a difference between generating/"hacking" your mons and RNG manipulating or anything similar? If yes, what is the difference? And I don't mean any truly illegitimate stats like 0 Speed or Illegal Moves.

I've been curious about competitive Pokemon lately, as I've always played casually, so I've watched some videos and the divide isn't explained very well. Both sound like cheating, yet one is okay and one isn't.

Not really. Both involve acquiring your TID/PID in some fashion (there's now trade bots that'll tell you, but before you needed to extract it with outside software. One then just creates the pokémon directly, the other uses an autistic spreadsheet to determine which exact frame to press the button to get desired result. Manips like to think it's not cheating, because they;re gaming the game rather than outright creation. But if they tried to count cards or game a one-armed bandit, they'd be fucked out the casino after getting a bit of a kicking, so they're not exactly playing legit.

RNG manipulation is basically down to using a timer and pressing a button at the right time. You aren't editing the game or changing its files directly. Plus RNG manip is its own pain in the ass process. On the other hand using PkHex or generating a Pokemon uses a third party program to directly edit the game's files, which is cheating. There's little difference between using PkHex or a Gameshark/Action Replay.

Granted I really don't give a fuck about comp in general, but I have used RNG manip to shiny hunt in Colosseum. It sucked was but it's less painful than trying to reset for months. If I just generated a shiny with all the Ribbon Master ribbons it wouldn't have the same sense of accomplish, personally.

Think of a Pokemon being generated in terms of playing roulette at a casino. Playing through the game normally, you throw your ball into the wheel without consideration for what's going on and get whatever result you get. When you RNG manipulate, you know that if you throw the ball in a certain way and at a certain time you're going to get the result you want, so you throw the ball in such a way that you get the result you want. When you gen, you're essentially screaming "OH MY GOD WHAT'S OVER THERE" to the casino attendant and then placing the ball where you want it to go while her back is turned. Some people (the banned VGC players) go as far as putting the ball in a different spot but scribbling over the number with sharpie.

That's an incorrect comparison, because there's nothing in the rules of a card game about counting cards or the such.
The fact that casinos will kick you out for doing so is because they don't want you to turn profit. They should not be allowed to do that, but unfortunately, they can and will.

Yeah it has the plus side of the mon you get being 100% legit and within what the game could give you, but having a bunch of 4+ IV wild caught shinies just isn't going to happen through regular gameplay so I'd rather just inject at that point. And unless you RNG your ID from the start of the game, you need to use pkhex to find your SID anyway.

You do know that 0 speed isn't truly 0, right? The term means that a pokemon's speed iv is 0, and likely has a speed reducing nature. 0 speed refers to the slowest speed a pokemon can have, which isn't ever truly 0.
