The combat system is above the mainline in terms of snappiness and immersement, but since its a pokemon game its still ugly as piss when its not being compared to its inferior brethren and is measured against other non-pokemon games.
Honestly, in an age of unfinished and broken games, it's like that one above average tech demo or alpha/beta build where there's real promise behind it, but its just undercooked. That alone puts it above everything post DS era by default tho. I'd go into more detail but I don't care that much right now
