Even if they can take care of themselves just fine, factoring in some mons that are more inclined to solitude than not, you would only have so much time in the day to devote yourself to so many mons. Generally speaking, the more mons you have to deal with, the less time you can focus on them individually. Which is fine if you are not focusing on doing more that caring for a large flock, herd, or pack that can socialize among themselves, like certain herd mon such as mareep, or flocks of pidgey. But going by how very intelligent "tame" animals that come into human care demand lots of personalized care and mental stimulation in order to thrive properly with their happiness in mind, the same would no doubt to apply to Pokemon at large, especially the more intelligent ones out of the lot.
You can mitigate this by having other mons and humans interact with them, but I think the point of this thread in particular is to at least focus on a few, select mons that you can share a bond with and cherish.
And depending on the region, timeline, and so on you find yourself in, you may find yourself encountering less than savory characters. If we are to use the anime as a baseline for Pokemon sapience, and crime, it is not a non zero factor to take into consideration, even if you aren't dealing with the likes of larger criminals like Team Rocket, the eco terrorists of Magma and Aqua, the radical zealots of Plasma and Galactic, and so on. Don't forget to add Orre to the mix if you find yourself unfortunate enough to end up their while that whole shadow mon business is going down.
If such is the case, then you need to find the means to defend your mons, be it through either training them, or introducing those ruffians to the business end of a shotgun, blade, or the local law enforcement. If they are to be a part of your family, why not defend them so as well if you are able?
