It's why that speech he gave about being lonely at the top, wondering if he reached the limits of his strength, and that only him jobbing to Eternatus made him realize there was still more to go and what-not felt so trite to me. It was just so self-centered. Like if the only thing that mattered was that there was still more for "him" and nothing else. No sense of wonderment at how vast the world still is. How despite him being a Champion he's actually still in reality very small. Just ME, ME, ME.

Even the battles with Ash themselves show that contrast, Cynthia was elated to see Ash finally reaching her level after knowing him for so long and treated him respectfully, as a serious opponent from beginning to end. She knows him well, as someone who's saved the world with and traveled alongside him too.
Leon? Despite how much they kept shoving down our throats that Ash and Leon were alike, the same type of person and trainer, yadda yadda, and how much Leon was looking forward to fighting Ash, through the entire battle he constantly kept underestimating and looking down on Ash and only talking about what he was getting from the battle himself, only caring about his own fun.
