This is a pretty good point. Half the fun of old /padt/ was complaining about how bad the show was and pointing out bullshit. There's nothing to criticize or complain about with Horizons. We used to have a little bit of that with Liko not catching pokemon, but that didn't last long.
Almost makes me wish Roy was an unbearable faggot like some of us expected him to be, just so we'd have someone to dumpster.

This series is starting to bore me. I really wanted it to be peak but the way Pokémon seems to have abandoned comedy and the occasional one-episode misadventure is sad to me. I have no faith that they're going to build up to a story that genuinely impresses me, so the fact that the series has become so DRY in service of heavy serialization leaves me wondering if I should even keep watching.

It's seems Liko just completely high jacked everything because of her Pendant, Her Grandmother and now it seems :Lucius is her Ancestor. Honestly it probably wouldn't been better if both Liko and Roy were separated for a bit then they probably meet up later on giving them both their fair share of episodes.

If anything, this series is a swing in the complete opposite direction. Every episode moves the story forward, and no time is spared for gags, antics, random Pokemon, or side characters. You can't skip any episodes because they all very slowly are inching the plot forward.

So the breakdown of the episode is

> Gang regroups at the Pokémon Center. Friede and Charizard escaped Moltres simply by flying away fast because Friede said Moltres was way stronger than Charizard.
> Friede and Roy get excited at the prospect of their being someone stronger than Friede out there
> Dot learns about G-Moltres via internet rumors. Roy wants a rematch to make Fuecoco stronger.
> Liko wonders why Moltres is so angry
> Rematch starts but the characters are clearly overwhelmed. Liko tries to Talk no Jutsu Moltres but it doesn’t work.
> Liko is dead set on applying Kabu’s advice to win. Arboliva appears, and it’s Grassy Terrain boosts Sprigs up. The combined motions finally calm Moltres down.
> Moltres wants to talk to Terapagos, and after they talk, Arboliva creates another visit to *that* realm. Lucius talks to Moltres and mentions someone named Lakua. Moltres was angry because it missed Lucius and starts to cry.

That's the problem though, Liko's objective seems to also be apart of Roy's main objective which is Rayquaza. Since it looks like Lucius is an Ancestor of Liko, Rayquaza seems to be more important to Liko's story

The quality of writing went up but now there’s zero actual stakes because they’re just cruising through everything with the kiddy gloves on because any time things look bad for them, they’ll always have a safety net to bail them out. Blueberry Academy, if it shows up either, is 100% gonna be an end-of-season location. That place is being billed as part of the final piece of the whole Terastlallization/Terapagos puzzle for Scarlet and Violet, so it showing up early when that aspect is so tied to the anime's plot is unlikely.

Wasn't today Arboliva's job? I was honestly more worried that they might shaft the ancientmons more than anything. Sure it got used as a boat in the 16th episode. And the turtle did his job of showing the past fragments AFTER they managed to calm down G-Moltres. Nearly every single 'climactic' episode of this series has hinged upon a magical artifact coming Liko's rescue, no other series has made this chosen one bullshit the center of its entire identity. Several movies have put Ash in the position of being a chosen one or a descendent or interacting with some kind of magic that makes him fly or come back to life, but the movies are of little consequence and suck anyway. We're like 25 episodes into Horizons and every fucking time Liko is in danger she gets saved by magic.

At large, Pokemon's general concept is befriending and training creatures to overcome adversity. Liko's magical pendant doesn't really factor into this because it smashes through adversity without any input from Liko herself, and her relationships with the magical Pokemon it calls forth are tenuous at best. It's a weak narrative device and the returns are already starting to diminish. No amount of internal monologues of Liko wondering if she's good enough will make up for the fact that she never has to DO anything.

All of this would be forgiven if there was something lively and fun going on in each episode, but more often than not, they're overfull of exposition, 'build-up', and point-A-to-point-B shit happening to move the characters to the next setpiece. It feels passionless and devoid of life.

The characters are enjoyable enough but the 'threats' aren't scaled for the beginner trainers that RikoRoy are unlike present "Ash." If you were to use a shounen example, you would have them progressing to fight tougher and tougher opponents (until maybe you take it too far and they fight Gods). Unfortunately, until RikoRoy gets to that level they need a bailout plot device and they will continue- let's say "sucks." And unfortunately, they aren't progressing fast enough if they want to fight the Admins let alone Rayquaza on a level footing. They probably couldn't even take on a "Pikachu"

At least Riko is kinda getting somewhere by finding an alternative path as some kind of Poke empath. And as a housewife she is also progressing in her housewife training in handling all kinds of "cock."

This doesn't fix the execution, where they ALWAYS come out to save Liko. Terapagos, Rayquaza, and Arboliva have all done it, and Terapagos is a repeat offender. The show has created an expectation that this is what will resolve all disputes.

Listen, nobody thinks a story shouldn't have buildup. JN definitely lost steam in a lot of its stories due to being almost completely episodic. But one thing JN didn't do was forget its duty to the audience to entertain; each episode of Pokemon should have something of value on its own, and not just be a piece of a bigger story. I want to laugh, I want to have at least a small moment of satisfaction, and I want to feel like each episode brings a little bit of its own flavor so I remember it exists. There are too many episodes of HZ that feel like 'well, this one wasn't great but at least it leads into the next one seamlessly', and that doesn't inspire confidence for me to want to keep tuning in.

Journeys and Horizons seems to have traded off a lot of issues in different strength and problems. Since Horizons started I watch each episode with its follow up back to back since that's more the experience to better go through. I can get behind the frustration that comes with the swap from episodic to serialized ones but at the very least the pays off like Roy's Wattrel and Dot's buildup as the semi-third protagonist. Episode 16 remains my highlight because the build of the previous episode came together so fucking good.

A side note: can Dot even be classified as the third protagonist or is she more of a major supporting one? The presentation was kinda confusing on that front to me.

It could work in HZ's favor given the reception to a movie with another special shillmon as well as a special ancestor for the super-special chosen one.

Course this then brings up the question of what you would do with the story arcs. They all seem to be following a similar pattern, with Luciusmon justifying them showing up at the region. Blackfug shows up at X, they go to investigate, maybe fight the jobber/admin, maybe find one of the Luciusmons and, as always, marketing probably played a role in requesting some very special mons get in like G Moltres.

Not exactly what I meant, I was referring to her problem from ep20 with putting others first, which already tied back earlier. Would've been a extremely left field move if that wasn't adressed earlier and the legendaries would've rolled with it.

I can see where you are coming from, I really do. But I saw in today's episode Liko and Co gradually taking up most of the stock involved and getting a hand in their original, which is a contrast to the previous instances where the legendaries bails them out. I see this as a trend to write them out of the dependency on these crutches. Of course they would pop because they are Pokémon in the end but the focus would go more to their own Pokémon in pinches.

But the "keep tuning in" point is something I can 100% get behind at times for other shows with a non-episodic structure. I think this will always be a point to argue about Pokémon with the episodic or serialized nature, since both have their merits and banes for a Pokémon show. I made it a habit to rewatch the previous one right before then since it flows better as a binge.

Maybe I should start a Watchguide similar to the Recapanon but for Horizons, taking note of the characters and it's writers since instances like the Murdock one had a notable contrast to the previous episodes before then.

I like everything about this series and ride except the fact it feels like it's blowing its load fast so I'm fearful us of getting nothing of substance after Terapagos DLC.

The real best case scenario is Horizons flops and they make a new series with new characters, but a bit more similar in tone to the XY-JN era. Big cool fights, comedic filler, and lots of focus on overcoming challenges. Leave Ash and Liko in the bin, start fresh and focus more closely on the core tenants of the Pokemon series.

They also can't walk this back, huge blemish IMO. The ancient adventurer was the center of Roy's goal, but now it has a lot more to do with Liko than Roy. He has all the drive and wants to put in the effort, but unfortunately for him, Liko has the bloodline, the macguffin, and both the Rising Volt Tacklers and Explorers are only here for HER, not him.

Very different. Neither are braindead dumb and spastic hyperactive like Ash was, and they each have their own personalities instead of becoming a soulless husk like Ash ended up being. From what the preview implies, all of the Explorers are going to go Full Operation on grandma's castle. Given my basis in JRPG plots, my guess is that Terapogos (or a monster ball) will be taken from the team to be the big Hook for arc 2 of Horizons.

It seems like not only are the admins coming, but even the Butler guy personally arriving so this is most likely going to be another wake-up call to get stronger.

It depends on what you want out of a Pokemon anime. Horizons is mostly focused on arc-based storytelling and the human characters seem to take more of a center than in the Ashnime. There's little filler/CotD stuff, and a lot of it is being built up as a long-term mystery. If that sounds appealing to you, go for it. I'll say that the characters as they are, are generally better than Ashnime characters, but as others have pointed out in this thread, there is less zany humor, which might be a turn off.

Sun and Moon is an enjoyable romp where Ash is more of a kid again rather than just a battle-crazed adventurer, and a surprisingly large cast of secondary protagonists help build up the setting. The art style change is a MAJOR casual filter, because let's face it; it's ugly. If you can get past how ugly the style is at first, you'll find an enjoyable story that faithfully recreates the games' content, both regular S&M and USUM. Also, the best pokemon cry ever comes from one of the ultra beasts. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA. Likewise, this series ends on a really good note.
Horizons is the followup, and reduces the cast by a tremendous amount. Ash has one traveling companion this time instead of the usual two to three. Personally, I found it to be fairly dull most of the way through, especially in episodes focusing on the deuteragonist Go, especially since he's literally the embodiment of the mobile game, catching pokemon left and right with zero effort. Ash's There's a second supporting character, but she gets little spotlight until the end, mostly wasting her potential. Don't let /vp/'s jaded nature get to you though; it was a good sendoff for Ash as this was his final adventure that we follow. It wasn't perfect, but the ending was good.

Give them a watch. They've got their ups and downs, but what show doesn't? Just don't be a bitch that gets filtered by the drastic art style change.

I kind of wonder if Terapagos/Lucius is only the first "treasure" or "mystery" or whatever. Because they've encountered three of the six Pokemon, and Terapagos is out of its shell now. Even if we assume the latest for Indigo Disk as March 2024, that's still six months or about 25 episodes if there are no breaks. If they time the climax of this storyline with the DLC, that's still a year and a half of time Horizons needs to fill until the hype cycle for Gen 10 begins in earnest. I'm not really sure what they do with it after that. I guess if there's a Gen V remake coming, they do stuff in Unova. Other than that though, do they just give the Horizons staff carte blanche to do Rising Volteccer shit for a year?

Also please give Amethio something to do before he shows up again, or just cut bait with him. Something needs to happen before he faces Friede for the fifth time for me to care at this point.

I can't be the only one who finds this stupid, right? It's the weakest grass move, it shouldn't be more effective just because you're asking the Pokémon to make it "sharp" or "strong". In the same fucking episode Fuecoco learned flamethrower, and that felt a lot more hype and easy to get behind than this "strong leafage" shit. Just have the cat learn razor leaf or leaf storm if you want it to have a fuckhuge leaf attack, not the weakest grass move.

While we're at it, pokemon moving around is also dumb. They should stand still. And take turns.

Modifying a weak move to give it broader application and more longevity is perfectly valid in a story. There is merit to fundamental mastery rather than immediately jumping onto the newest trick you learned.
Although, I do agree with some of your sentiment. She really should get some new moves, so she could have more moves to experiment with and show off practically using unorthodox methods.
In the same vein that Contest trainers experiment with moves, but instead of doing that to make it pretty, it's done purely for the sake of murder.

In the past, like with Goh's Scorbunny, they innovated Ember by using its feet to build up friction, create Heat, and then kick a rock to do a makeshift pyro ball. It had a concept, they overcame a shortcoming, and it got stronger. I love when the anime does shit like that with moves. But literally asking the Pokémon to do a 'strong' attack, with that simple verbiage completely changing the nature of the attack with no prior practice? Liko didn't catch Moltres, an ancient legendary trainer did. Liko made Moltres chill out enough to be reasoned into returning to its Pokeball. She also didn't catch Terapagos. Terapagos was sealed inside a pendant that she got as an heirloom from her grandma. She didn't beat either in a Pokemon battle and subdue them.

I also don't know who you're directing this complaint at. Most of the people who whined about shit during Journeys stopped showing up after MPM. There are more Gohfags here than ever before, no one cares about the Suicune anymore.
