Every complaint about Black and White essentially applied to “muh based Soul Era”. The game design in Pokémon has always been weak in many ways. These games have never been challenging. Battling NPCs has never been fun. Pokémon selection in any given region pre-XY (except maybe Hoenn) has historically been dogshit.
The best parts of Pokémon, the music, worldbuilding and exploration, were not only good in BW but arguably distilled and perfected. There are valid complaints about BW (the forcing of Unovamons, the writing, etc). But you CANNOT blame BW for modern Pokémon.
GameFreak pivoted after BW because they learned all the wrong lessons. GameFreak believed BW failed because attention spans were getting dangerously short and kids only wanted to play cheap mobile games, therefore they needed to strip down content and streamline world design to make everything hallways. This is fucking stupid because the people who like Pokémon are autistic/have raging ADHD and love to hyper focus. BW failed because Pokemon was at the very bottom of its popularity and the gaming industry was focusing on high def shooters and hack and slash action games.
Had GF stayed the course and continued developing Pokémon into more richly developed RPGs they’d be some of the best games on the market. A 2023 Pokémon game with a similar amount of content and exploration to BW would be so good even you fucking /vp/ troglodytes couldn’t complain about it.
