It introduced the most legendary of legendary Pokemon (you can never quite top Arceus in terms of sheer importance), it perfected the gameplay with the physical/special split, the professor of the region was Professor Oak's superior. It also brought the series full circle with remakes of the games that closed out the classic Game Boy era. There was nowhere left to go but down, and that's what happened. Gen V was by no means awful, but it was clearly not as good and was designed to be a reboot with a different generation in mind as its core audience. Pokemon never felt the same starting with Gen 5.
