Really wish there was a greater variety of pokemon than mostly Gen 2 shitmons they couldn't fit into the GBA games. XD fixes most of the issues with Colosseum but the story and characters are a lot worse imo. Still purified every mon for that Ho-Oh though

there's definitely a motivating reason for including the pokemon they did but part of the appeal of colosseum is limiting your monster options and doing it with a set of pokemon you'd probably not use otherwise. for the most part you can still sweep the game with espeon but otherwise youre team is going to be made up of pokemon you'd probably not use/rely on to the extent you have to in this game

And modern pokemon isnt? Hell, I'd argue colosseum was intentionally linear with the main focus being a new gen 3D battle sim.
What colosseum does well which isnt talked about enough is the game feels much larger and scaled correctly than gamefreaks 3D renditions. And im not talking about just the size of pokemon. The camera angles, zooms and close ups make the player apart of the game and are extremely well done. A big part of the reason why gamefreak's 3D feels like ass because the camera angles lack the flare and soul like past renditions. They simply don't know what they're doing. Giving the player complete control over the camera during battle like PLA is a mistake and a camera director makes battles feel more lively.

NTA but another reason why Colosseum's world felt larger was because there were no roads between locations. You picked a location to go to from a map and then got a cutscene of Wes riding on his motorcycle, which sold Orre as this huge, massive wasteland with only a handful of relevant places of interest. Whereas in the 3D Pokemon games, so the graphics aren't abstract anymore like the 2D games but towns are still a 60 second walk from one to the other, so the regions feel claustrophobic and small.

Yeah, I can agree on that. Even though the cutscenes are much shorter between areas than a walk in SV, your brain will stitch together the concept of needing to travel far.
While I like the implementation in Colosseum, I think a proper fix in modern days is possible. I dont think gamefreak realizes how to scale a true open world. I dont think it has to be like DayZ length of running, but right now the whole map feels small and empty. Why give the players the option to explore without an environment worth exploring?

The game would have been perfect if they had wild Pokemon encounters between towns.

If generating Pokemon was very difficult due to technical problems, a couple of pre-programed encounters would have been enough. I imagine an Onix and Stelix when passing through the desert, Giglar near the caves, a Tranpich termite mound, Ludicolo in the oasis, or a special event where you must Protect a farm from Cacturne surges marching at night

With a couple of simple cinematics, some generic scenarios for wild encounters and putting a little more effort into the lore of the region this game would have been a gem, for example you already had the 3 legendary beasts programmed, create a mythical background for them or make them part of the cosmogony of a fictional version of native Americans with clothes based on Xatu, Ursaring, Furret or Noctowl or a secondary mission where you had to rob a steampunk train, Orre has so much potential but GF's pride doesn't let them see that and they want bury it next to its creative studio.

Seriously, the lack of Pokemon on PC was due to technical difficulties and they knew how to cover it up by giving it this wasteland lore and I applaud that. But they must have realized at some point that they couldn't tell a story about the Pokémon world without at least a couple of wild Pokémon, even if these weren't catchable and were only part of the background, it didn't cost them anything to give us a couple of cinematics about the Orre's scarce fauna or invent a rule like they did in Pokemon Rangers where catching is prohibited or Detective Pikachu where battles are prohibited, that way you can integrate wild Pokemon into the story without having to modify the mechanics of your spin-off.

This game is OK but comparing it to even the maligned 3DS and Switch games is fucking insane, there is literally no exploration, no searching for Pokemon, stupid grinding just to make your Pokemon not suck shit, it has the absolute bare minimum of what is required to qualify as an RPG. It makes the mainline games look deep in comparison.

There's some neat things the main series could learn from this, the tone is unique, but to say it's anywhere near as good is just nostalgia induced delusion and I can only conclude you've never played a single other JRPG in your entire life. If someone says "Pokemon should be way more linear, have way fewer monsters, remove wild Pokemon, and make its story the focus", everyone would call them retarded, but when you attach Colosseum to it everyone starts soifacing and screaming MY CHILDHOOD

Im moreso pointing out the application of graphics, scale, lighting and camera director that makes the game feel more immersive and impressive. You can play SV on a 40 inch tv and it still feels like a handheld game. Colosseum feels like an actual console game.

I will say, I liked having Battle arenas designed for each area/biome.

Now that Battles take place seamlessly in the field, cinematic animations are out, AND they have to rationalize how every single Pokemon will logically interact with the map. It’s good for developing a more immersive play experience, but also leads to inconsistencies in presentation like pic related.
