People don't like feeling like they're forced to enjoy something. The parallels to Gen 1 made it feel like it was trying to imitate the passion that went into the first games, but doing it again in 2010 made it look like they were trying to pander to nostalgia and weren't confident enough to create something really special like Gen 1 was.

I enjoyed it a lot but I wasn't having weird abstract meta thoughts like this while playing. I also wasn't looking for a reason to hate it. probably the same reason I enjoy gens 8 and 9 so much.

The more i look at the shitnova pokedex the more disgusted i feel. This is a japanese monster catching game or an amerimutts fantasy?

But no one told people to be mad about anything. The game received extremely positive reviews in both the west and east and the new dex was cited as one of the reasons for the improvement. However, somehow most people came to the same conclusion that they found the new dex, and especially the starters to be repulsive. Why is this? I feel like my post does a good job at rationalizing this collective experience that everyone had in 2010-2011

I wouldn't know because I played unova for the first time in the last year. I skipped out on pokemon after gen 3 disappointed me severely as a child and didn't pick it up again until around five years ago, and unova was one of the last regions I hadn't played. still haven't gotten around to alola. I tried once but the cutscenes were too much.

Well, yeah, the internet was a thing so all the people got together to share their own experiences with the game and it just happened to be that the majority of them had no interest in the designs of the game. The whole "Muh Pikachu and Charizard!" thing is just a big scapegoat which especially falls apart when you realize that Charizard isn't even available in any other region, so why would anyone care about not being able to use it now when they never did before?

There was a large misconception in the west that Gen 5 was going to be a "reboot" of the series, which led people to view the new mons as replacements as opposed to additions. You'll notice that the west is much more receptive to the designs as a whole than people here are.

I don't hate gen 5 mons, but most of them are extremely boring to me. Vanilluxe is actually one of my favorites of the generation. But i feel like one of the issues is that none of my gen 5 favorites are my all time favorites pokemons.
