It's interesting how a large percentage of /vp/ have convinced themselves that Ballio is better than Primarina, even though Ballio is pretty much the living embodiment of everything /vp/ constantly whines about when it comes to modern starter designs. It if it was real, it would be by far the most hated starter on this board.

Ballio on a visual design looks much closer to a real Pokemon than the Gen 8 mons. Ballio is closer to something like Machamp than Incineroar.

I think there were text leaks going around that talked about Rowlet evolving into a Robin Hood/archer kind of design.
Also, I don't remember if this fake leak came out before or after the real leak that everyone deemed as fake. If this came out later, it's possible the artist was partially inspired by the real Decidueye design but on the conviction that it was fake.

As someone who was there, no one "fell for" this.
It was obviously fake but the fun part was "this would be a surprising and cool take on what is normally an anthro toy animal" which lo and behold is not only what we got, but continue to get to this very day.
