How much of Gen 1 and 2 Pokédex can I get in HG/SS?
Trying to go for a living dex and thought I might try starting in this game.

HGSS has every pokemon except
-Regis
-Sinnoh starters
-Glameow and Stunky
-Lake trio
-Heatran
-Cresselia
-All Mythicals

Do note that the Gen 1,2, and 3 starters are obviously locked to one choice per save file, so while they are all obtainable in game you will be locked out of 6 starter lives per save. All the starters except for the Johto starters are effectively locked until you are nearly done with the game (not credits, but after defeating Red)

How did people do level up evolutions for dexes back in the day?

you can't get leafeon, glaceon, probopass, or magnezone in HGSS
you can also only pick one of bulbasaur/charmander/squirtle, chikorita/cyndaquil/totodile, treecko/torchic/mudkip, and dialga/palkia/giratina per save file
some pokemon like lucario are also really hard to get in HGSS and are much easier in DPP

the vast majority of pokemon are done evolving by level 40 which isn't much grinding at end game with lucky eggs

battling the elite 4 over and over. or, in HGSS specifically, you can also soam rematch gym leaders over and over once you've unlocked the rematch

Slap on lucky egg on to shitmon, otherwise give it exp share and don't bother switching. Along with Missingno item cloning glitch on rare candies if gen1, pokemon holding rare candy cloning if gen 2. Gen 3 was just plain grinding
