They realised they needed to make ONE good water starter after 20 years of allowing them all to be mogged by a fish/snake/windsock thing, which they then turned around and straight ignored to shill the fire and grass starters respectively.

Gyarados is both stronger than ALL water starters by BST and has a higher attacking stat than 7 of them, matched only by Intelleon and bested by Primarina. It's also done the "generic aquatic monster" trope a whole fuckload better than any water starters past \Fearalgatr has. Coupled with the OPhy/Spec split in Gen 4 and it just got better, while it took for Primarina to make the water starter an actual viable pick over a stupid weak fish you feed candy to to Lv. 20 to make a rapetrain.

There is really an issue with modern starters Pokemon, they always looks extremely lame and weak. I don't understand why they stopped making cool monsters, it feels like a never-ending nightmare.

I love the gen 7 starters, especially Primarina and Decidueye, but you can do this with the fire starters too.
