Fun fact, the moment I received the Master Ball for becoming champ, I knew that Kieran had one too, so I had a hunch. In Area Zero, Kieran's old personality suddenly seemed to slip through here and there - we even hear a "wowzers", something we haven't seen him say for a long time now. However, as you progress into the depths, Kieran grows more and more agitated again. Us doing most of the work rubs him the wrong way, the tensions grow as the showdown approaches. We find what must be the titular Hidden Treasure of Area Zero, and Kieran tries desperately to get a hold of it. While he violently pulls on the crystal, he suddenly starts to vent. This part is honestly my favourite, the dam breaks and he's finally spilling all the things that hurt him all this time. About how we are everything he wants to be cause we have strong Pokemon, can go wherever we want, can be friends with anyone. How he loved(!) Ogerpon since forever ago, yet it chose us over him. And even his sister who was always mean to everyone (including him) suddenly is nice to the MC. How we worked so hard, yet he had nothing. Terapagos was all he had now, his last chance - in his eyes, that is.
He was envious. He always wanted all those things, even before we met him, and felt frustrated that he couldn't do it, while we could, very easily so even. All this time his envy had been eating away at him, made him feel like he was worth less, made him hate us. He just wanted to be loved and admired by others, and thought that getting stronger would get him there.
It seems like they tried way harder in SV with the writing in general (possibly cause negative backlash from SwSh), the story was a lot better, more fleshed out and a lot of characters get actual personalities and characters arcs. I really liked it.
