In this new Series, the Pokemon exists as "character's tools" for the sake of existence & marketing. You can remove these Pokemon away & it resembles like a late night anime.
And the plot itself is meh because the weekly anime isn't designed for this.
The new Series is simply playing catch up to nip anime trends.
This "gamble" may mean there will be no weekly anime or it still exists, regardless whether the new Series does well or not in the end.
