>>55402441Gen 4 starters are great, about on par with Gen 3 IMO
>>55402490This. Even if I kinda like the Gen 6 starters, there’s no doubt that there was a major change in visual design and visual balance that started with Emboar in Gen 5 and became what it is today with the Gen 6 starters. More anthropomorphic, more job-defined, more costume-like.
>>55402491I agree; Serperior aligns well with Gens 1-4 and Emboar is very much a modern starter design. Samurott I slightly disagree on. I think it’s uncomfortably stuck between the two (shame though because I absolutely adore Oshawott).
>>55402519I slightly agree. Decidueye and Primarina are definitely not as blatantly anthropomorphic and humanoid. Primarina, while mermaid (half-human) themed, still looks very much like a cartoon seal - more than any human traits. And Decidueye has the benefit of owls being bipedal. If you just made an owl bigger, it would still have relatively similar proportions to Decidueye. So it is humanoid, but it kinda gets away with it because it’s not a stark contrast to the animal it’s based on.
>>55402540This is fair, but some of the jobmon humanoid starters go too far by having humanlike personalities and jobs. Minotaurs, mothmen, and harpies don’t have humanlike personalities or human jobs, though.
>>55402602NTA, but you’re completely missing the point. *Most* of the humanoid starters go too far into human territory to be monstrous. They’re just not. Take away the human job and human personality, and you’d be good. For example: Blaziken. It’s humanoid, but does not seem to have a humanlike personality nor a human job. It’s a humanoid chicken monster. It works. For example: Incineroar, on the other hand, has a distinctly humanlike personality and a distinctly human job. Blaziken lines up with harpies and minotaurs more. Incineroar lines up with furries more. It’s a spectrum of human-to-animal, and there’s a balance where you get a monster.
