>>55436868Gen 3 transfers to gen 4 via a DS/DS Lite and the Pal Park. Direct transfer.
Gen 4 transfers to gen 5 via two DS-family consoles and the Poke Transfer function. Direct transfer.
Gen 5 transfers to gen 6 via a 3DS that has Pokemon Bank and Poke Transporter (not Transfer, that's different). From Bank you can then deposit them in gen 6 games. Indirect transfer.
Gen 6 transfers to gen 7 via Bank. Once a mon goes to gen 7 it can't go back to gen 6, even from Bank, though it can be put back in Bank. Indirect transfer.
Gen 7 transfers to gen 8 via Pokemon Bank and Pokemon Home. Indirect transfer.
Gens 8 and 9 can freely transfer between each other so long as the mon is programmed into that game, via Home. Indirect transfer.
And gens 1 and 2 VC can freely transfer between each other so long as those Pokemon and moves are programmed into the game. Direct transfer. They can also transfer to Bank via the Poke Transporter.
What's going away are 3DS online services, meaning the GTS. Bank is still staying up, but nobody knows for how much longer after. Once Bank dies Pokemon won't be able to make the jump from the 3DS to Switch anymore. Officially, at least.
