She makes a good point. We are too harsh on XY they are good classic pokemon games with proper routes and nice monster designs

SwSh is a near carbon copy of SM/USUM when focusing on routes and environment structure.

Retro Pokemon: 1-2
Classic Pokemon: 3-6
Modern Pokemon: 7-9
7 is debatable, otherwise this is correct.

Triple and rotation battles are literally nothing like megas, z-moves, dynamax, etc what a dishonest take and by that logic we’d call gen 3 the start of battle gimmicks because it introduced doubles. New battling styles are not the same power-up transformations for Pokémon and their attacks.

Yeah right. DP doesn’t give you free perfect IVs out of fucking nowhere. DP doesn’t have 1/4096 shiny odds. DP actually has content and not just soulless gimmickshit. DP actually has a coherent level curve. DP are good games.

The only thing that separated Pokemon from any other monster taming game. A complete and extensive bestiary encouraging you to collect every single one instead of just a selection they decided to put in a game.

In all honestly the Natdex didn't matter that much but to me it seems like it was a symptom of the bigger problem since gameplay-wise SM/USUM was nothing at all structured like previous games. Even after, the only thing like it was SWSH.

The classic games are the ones set in Japan and localized by TPC, the modern games are the ones set outside of Japan and localized by TPCi. There's a pretty visible design shift that accompanies this change as well, not just the game's world and aesthetics - RG through HGSS care more about prioritizing gameplay and maintaining a continuous world while BW onward are more concerned with stories/human characters and each game having a distinct world. The nadir of this is in SV, where the main plot / villainous team literally doesn't have anything to do with Pokemon at all

I think people are calling SwSh the cutoff for modern because they view it as modern = bad and not much more than that

This. Platinum is the peak of the series but that’s largely due to DP already being amazing. DP are the second best base games after BW, and if the backlash against BW didn’t happen and we got pokemon Gray instead of B2W2, as well as Hoenn remakes in gen 5, it may very well have turned out even better than Platinum and HGSS.
