I like DP's and BW1's small dexes (150).
Hoenn's and Pt's (200) are cool too but almost overwhelming.
Johto (250) and BW2 and SM (300) are rather overwhelming.
USUM (400) and Kalos (450) are completely overwhelming.
I like to feel like I've "gotten to know" every pokemon in the region. I never feel that way with a big dex. Bigger dexes make each individual pokemon feel less important or special somehow. And less like they actually "belong" in the region.
The human brain is only designed to process so many names at a time, or something. Big pokedexes just hurt my small brain.
That said I don't blame them for making bigger dexes in the newer games. I'm sure it would've been boring if it was just 150 every single time. So in that sense I'm glad the dex size isn't the same every time. But, personally, I prefer the smaller dexes, and I feel overwhelmed by the bigger dexes. Personally.
