Why is it that Mega, out of all the gimmicks, occasionally has people say it's not a gimmick? When Z-Moves are clearly the least like the other 3 gimmicks?

The only thing it shares with the other gimmicks is the once-per-battle feature. Meanwhile, Mega has way more in common with Dyna and Tera then Z-Moves.
Wouldn't it make more sense to call these things "transformation gimmicks" with Mega Evolution being the gen 6-7 gimmick, Dynamax gen 8, and Terrestrialization gen 9?
