He was barely a rival, I fought with him more often than against him. Which I didn't mind I guess, it was a change of pace after getting raped by cheren every 5 seconds in BW1. I'm guessing they did it that way on purpose, because they wanted to differentiate BW2 from BW1 as much as possible.

iirc you battle alongside Hugh more times than you battle against him, which is really unique and a great way to keep the rival active throughout the story without having constant battles like with Cheren and Bianca. I enjoyed BW overall but that got real grating real fast.
