The neck frill is used to collect heat while the Pokemon sunbathes during the warmer months, which is stored to keep its body warm during deep underwater dives. In fall, as the air chills, the extra surface area releases precious heat that the Vaporeon cannot afford to loose. Shedding the frill is painless, and soon after the shedding, Vaporeon will begin hibernating in its underwater nest. It will stay there while the water freezes over in winter and only emerge on land after the thaw in spring.
