agreed, there needs to be more going on on the right side for that trek to be worth it. if you want to keep the same general shape, even just moving the Pokemon center closer to the rest of town and making the upper part optional with a hidden item or a boathouse that you can use to get somewhere in the postgame. or maybe reposition those market stalls into a dedicated space in the center. if the program you use for mapping let's you display the player view rectangle around your cursor, like porymap, I recommend keeping it on so you can always keep the player pov in mind. you don't want to go more than a screen's worth of walking without something of note there.

How do you guys handle difficulty?
Like, is it good to require the player to go back to the PC, or carry a bunch of healing items?
I could see it being annoying to go back to heal all the time, but at the same time I wouldn't want to play a game that was brain dead easy.

I think it's fine for the player to carry healing items, just make sure money is plentiful. Other things you can do is design routes to have an easy path back to town, like with ledges for example, so it's not too much of a pain to get back to town if necessary. Or on particularly long routes you could include a rest house, or even a remote Pokemon center.

Silly question, but are there any good hacks based on Pokemon Yellow? It doesn't have to be based on Pokemon Yellow, I just thought that was the most up to date or complete of the three. Something where you can get all of the original 151 Pokemons and all 3 of the starters. Something that is pure millennial nostalgia bait. In essence, I am looking for the ultimate Gen 1 experience.

The thing about Pokemon that's really frustrating is that very, very rarely do you have to go long without a Pokemon Center that fully heals you, so you don't have to worry about keeping your team healthy. But the worst part is PP. You so rarely have a chance to use up your PP so there's very little reason to strategize, which differs from SaGa, the game that inspired Pokemon. In that game healing was a lot more limited (and cost money) so your resources were a lot more precious, especially because weapons had permanently usable charges and could run out. Even classes that could regenerate uses had to be careful, because you need to be careful to use your weak 20 use weapon or else you won't have your 5 use fire spell.

I don't really know what the solution to this in the Pokemon games is though, short of charging for the Pokemon Center.

Rather than money, what if you limited how often each Pokemon could be healed? You could have a step counter per-Pokemon that could either be a universal limit or vary depending on the species. If the counter has not at 0, you can't heal.
You could also use heals for HP and not PP. Or limit the amount of PP you have overall, and fill it up each time you level.

Same thing really, either way you owe more than you'll probably make in a lifetime once interest starts kicking in. And it'll tank your credit score so you can't get reasonable financing on anything else like a mortgage or car.

Suggestions:

Some of the paths are 2 tiles while some are 3 tiles? I suggest sticking to 2 tile for Gen 3 style tiles

Change the colors of the tiles so they at least don't look like the 94382847 other Gen 3 maps, def change the grass color, the mint green was always gross looking.

The empty line of tiles above the pokecenter/mart, remove it and move the buildings up 1 tile, there's too much empty space

Add some more smaller things in to fill in some of the space, like fences, light poles, benches.

The dock (?) is slightly too big with lots of empty space

Other than that, it's not a bad map, just needs some more adjusting.

Very, very hard to avoid the Theme Park Syndrome that dominates region design in this scene.
where would you put Sneasel in Hoenn? Shoal Cave is already too full with 2 ice types, IMO

Sneasel wouldn't make sense in the Shoal Cave because it's in the middle of the ocean. What would a weasel be doing out there?
Right at the top of Mt. Pyre would probably be a good spot to fit it in. They're not exclusively found in cold places as evidenced by Oni Mountain in Kitakami. A lore reasoning would be that it preys on the ghost-types and Chimecho found in that area.

Sneasel isn't a spooky Pokemon, but it is a natural-born climber that would reasonably attack ghost-types where they live. Maybe the two routes connected to Fortree as well? The gen 3 dex entries specifically mention it being adept at climbing trees and stealing eggs from nests. Now neither route has any birds, but they are heavily wooded.

I honestly feel like this limits how creative you can get with a route.
What I did for mine is integrate region lore. Basically, there's some big power flowing under the region and there are points where a bit of it is released into the surface, in those spots you can heal your pokemon if you interact with it.

The only thing that irks me is that the blue houses and the crane have way darker outlines compared to everything else, try muting them a little bit, example, the top left house next to the light pole, the light pole has no lines but the house has harsh lines, so it to me it doesn't blend in.

The layout is fine, but the trees used here and in the City next to it clash with the desert aesthetic. The trees give off a borreal or temperate feel which is too far from the desert of the route. Either change the trees or use a gate between the city and the route.

I'm gonna have to be honest, the other map was better. This one makes no sense.
You put a public beach next to a crane, and the crane can't even reach boats coming in. I can't think of anyone happily sitting under a massive crane carrying large metal containers.

It was fine where it was. The problem is that the path there is cramped as hell with the containers cluttered up on the path and that there is nothing else up there. If there was a dock or something in the water to make the area more lively it would definitely be improved.

The path leading up to the thing in the top right is about 5 times longer than it should be.
From the map editor it looks like a fun additional afterthought to an otherwise succinct map
As a player it represent 20-30 seconds of nothingness
The building should be at the place where the road turns to the right
I am trying to help you with the game philosophy but if you don't expect anyone to play your game feel free to ignore this comment.
If you want to see an example of this sort of thing done correctly it would be Misty's town in RBY notice how compact the actual city is and if you /need/ to have a location that feels far away put it at the end of a route with pokemon, trainers, and mazes for the player to explore
