Unfortunately, this mindset that Pokemon must ultimately only be "kawaii" has become deeply engrained in the Pokemon corporate world. Doing away with it would be tantamount to a major paradigm shift. But if Pokemon really is going to last forever, anything is possible. We can only hope.

Sugimori made cute designs too, and nothing he made was as over the top as what Digimon's put out.
The problem is that people like Tajiri are too focused on money. They believe cuteness is more merchandisable than coolness or scariness, and so therefore Pokemon must only ever be cute in order to maximize profit. It's the kind of thinking kills creativity.
