I don't think 2D is better than 3D, although BW's animated sprites certainly felt lively. BW sprites looked poised and ready for action, 3D models just kind of sit there waiting for commands.
I think scizor is a better example of a sprite that was downgraded between gen 5 and 6. Skarmory, too, a lot of flying types, Swellow, Tropius also comes to mind.
Some amount of soul WAS lost between gen 5 and 6. Of course, a lot was gained, so I can't really complain. It wasn't an upgrade or a downgrade, it was a side grade. There wasn't a definitive downgrade until the switch.
Spinoff games always had far superior graphics to the mainline 3D games though.
Samurott is a good design btw.
