I swear, Hoenn doesn't get enough credit for how seamless and gratifying it is to traverse. Every new area interacts with the last in one way or another that doesn't become apparent to the player until they gain access to more mechanics. You can't use the Fly HM until after the 6th gym, but you'll hardly notice until then because of how organic and uninterrupted the region layout is.
