Um, no? IIRC, Buu and Vegeta were beating each others' faces in on Toonami, Yu Yu Hakusho was relatively new (to us) having just been moved from Adult Swim, Lord of the Rings was regularly releasing films and video games, and Bionicles were at the center of every school book fair year after year after year.
Back then, we didn't have the same game grind culture that you children have today. It wasn't always about getting the latest AAA game, finishing it, and moving on to the next, and there weren't endless free ROM hacks and $3 high-quality indie games on Steam or an entire internet worth of games in our pockets at all times. Our parents had limited money and limited tolerance for video games, and we had something resembling an attention span unlike you zoomers today, so it wasn't unusual to obsess over one particular topic for years (DBZ and LotR were the big ones) or to put 500 hours into one GBA game.
I didn't get Sapphire right when Gen III came out, but maybe you just don't remember how replayable the Pokemon games are and were.
No, normalfags (that's what they're called; they're not "normies", zoomer) were all-in on video games, especially the Game Boy, and RSE were still the killer apps for the GBA. Whatever retarded nerd shit your older brother was into (reading your post, I don't believe for a second it was you) like Fire Emblem or Final Fantasy or whatever was the stuff that normalfags weren't into. Pokemon was a game that everyone had some version of, even it if wasn't the most popular thing in the entire world anymore.
