The Bug type wasn't holding it back. Being able to change types is inherently busted on set up sweepers since you change what types counter you.

It ran tera blast 60% of the time and bug buzz only 30% of the time in gen 9 ou i think. Usage stats aren't everything but it wasn't exactly always utilizing its bug typing in gen 9. Tera blast gave it "impossible" coverage, personally I feel that's what pushed it over the edge more than just the ability to change types

Bug just isn't super useful as a STAB since Psychic and Dark types have basically disappeared from the meta and Fire already covers Grass. Just like nobody would run Electric type attacks if there were no viable Water or Flying types around.

I wasn't paying attention to pokemon when SM was released so I never got to fuck around in the early-sm broken pheromosa meta either lol.

Volcarona is still well-usable in gens 5-8 ou, it's used tens of thousands of times a month across these tiers if i'm reading the usage stats correctly. It's only b& in gen 9 cuz of tera.
